Expanding Katrina

I would like to see how her current size compares to Floyd, Ivan, and even Tip...not that I am hoping for that...but if were to get as big as Floyd or even Tip(which I doubt)...it was devastate everything from NOLA to Pensacola

Tip was bigger than the whole Gulf. If it were that big, then we would have warnings from Charleston to Belieze, or something like that.

Tip was huge, warnings for most of the Eastern half of the country, well at least effects would be felt.

still got a while to go before she is as large as Floyd

at his peak
Hurricane winds extended 115 miles from his center
Tropical Storm winds extended 260 miles from his center


at per the 5 pm advisory

Katrina was
Hurricane winds extended 45 miles from her center
Tropical Storm winds extended 160 miles from her center

The tropical storm force wind radius (not diameter...RADIUS) on Tip was over 600 miles...in almost every direction. The circulation was the size of half the CONUS.

Local news says she is about 500 miles in width. :eek: Her expanding is being overlook compared to her windspeed. Could she grow to 750 or even 800 miles? :eek:

Hurricane watches will probably be extended further out due to the increasing size of the storm.

The good side is that big storms don't fluctuate in intensity so rapidly, so perfect conditions won't make it a Cat 5, instead a Cat 4 more possible.

The flip side is it likely will not significantly weaken just before landfall...
