NEW ORLEANS PEOPLE...What are you doing at this moment?!

#1 Postby AnthonyC » Sat Aug 27, 2005 5:12 pm

I'm curious...what is going through your mind at this moment? I can't imagine being in a situation where a category 4/5 hurricane will make landfall in my region within 48 hours. Are you planning to evacuate, ride out the storm at your house or staying at a hotel? Are you taking any personal items...clothing, food, furniture, etc...with you?

I'm sitting here on the internet. Can't evacuate...my job requires me to stay.

I really hope everyone there evacuates because in New Orleans if you choose to try to ride out a potential Cat 4/5 get as high as possible. Go to a shelter nearby, if you live at a 1st floor or 2nd floor building, do not ride it out there.

Finished boarding and picking up and waiting for 10 and/or 4 advisories before leaving. (Did it before and avoided most traffic). Deciding whether to go to Hammond or east to Destin. Wondering why the mayor uis just now calling for a voluntary evacuation. Wondering why no one I can see within a few blocks has boarded and/or picked up.

There are those of us in Law Enforcement that HAVE to stay in situations regardless of the threat, that's what taking the OATH does to ya! I don't know if skysummit is in that field, I would guess something along that line??

For everyone who is not facing this, its not easy, so bashing people does no good. I'm unaware of any thrill seekers saying they want to ride it out for kicks and, if they are, your telling them does no good. And what if this guy whose job requires him to stay is a cop, fireman, essential city personel? If he is, I appreciate him doing his job and being here to protect my property if I have property to come back to. So lighten up.

Unfortunately, I am constantly amazed that the compensation is so unbalanced for people who do much more important work than I do as a lawyer, such as you and my chidlren's teachers, then they get no respect. Thank you.

I'm relaxing in my home. I'm staying at a hotel in the French Quarter on the fourth floor in a room with no windows starting tomorrow. I'll be parking my vehicles on the fifth floor of an enclosed parking garage of this hotel. I've purchased 25 gallons of water, have plenty of canned goods, 10 bags of ice, 2 twelve packs of beer, a computer, and will honker down there. As for tonight, I'm sitting at home, watching local coverage of the storm, analyzing my weather sites on the internet, and am cooking baked chicken for dinner!! :D

I agree with you as to those people and apologize for seeming contrary, but things are a little bit tense here right now. As for those who stay for the thrill or out of stupidity, guess the stories about the lack of survivors from the Camille hurricane party don't matter.

Not bashing, but curious. What happens if (not likely I know, but if) the worst case scenario occurs and the city is flooded for weeks? What do you do then?

You folks in NOLA may be dodging the bullet once again. That water vapor loop sure looks like a course change is underway. The Florida panhandle is just one big hurricane magnet.

I'm listening to what my Mayor and local officials are telling me now...to have ample food and water for four days and be prepared to have no power for, at least, a week.

It's not just your doctors, fireman and cops that have to say folks. Both of my sons can NOT leave their jobs should we get in the same situation. One runs the city water and sewage dept and the other is at a refinery. Who in the world do you think will get that water and sewage out as fast as it's coming in to help the situation.....even if it is in vain? Who do you think will keep those refineries from literally exploding and killing millions more during power outages and severe weather? It's someones sons, daughters, moma or daddy that will be there, not you. So please think about these folks and pray for their safety as they sacrifice it all just for someone like you that they don't even know. :D
