#1 Postby EDR1222 » Sat Aug 27, 2005 3:57 pm

I know they got hit pretty hard yesterday as Katrina was moving SW. Just wondering if anyone has any news how about how things are down there.

I heard a tornado ripped through the Keys, they were getting pretty hammered, I heard on the radio/news a gust of around 100 in the Dry Tortugas as well.

Good friends live in Key Largo and said there's lots of branches and tree debris lying around, but everything else is fine. My friend is a ranger with the National Park and he went with a few other rangers to investigate Flamingo yesterday (mainland Monroe County). It was inaccessible by vehicle (road was under 5 feet of water), so they took their shallowest boat and what they found was the 40 or so residents were all safe, but those who lived in first-floor houses lost everything to flooding, and those who lived in houses on stilts (thus, second-floor houses) lost nothing except their cars. Everyone living in Flamingo lost their cars to the flooding.

I also read that a tornado tore apart a hangar in the middle Keys, but I don't know much else.
