NWS Key West Long Range Radar Just Corrected

#1 Postby gatorcane » Fri Aug 26, 2005 4:35 pm

The short range radar out of Key West is showing a WSW movement:

Long range radar is showing a NNW movement (this has been corrected, check it out):

It's hard to tell motion right now on radar but I just looked at a 30 image loop on IR and still see no signs of a northward turn. The whole system still appears to be heading WSW.

Its supposed to turn more northerly. Might be a sign of the turn but who knows. We all know how these things wobble.

Im monitoring Key West radar on GRlevel3 and it looks to be wobbling but if you look at the latest frames on the floater... it definately looks to be turning some. Its definately getting strong though.

checking out that radar, while I'm not sure about a NNW jog, that presentation does create an appearance of at least a WNW movement during the hour of that loop... we shall see...

The pros have said not to use the long range to try and track...Use the short-range out of Key west and it is still moving west. The shape and contour of the eye may give the image or wobble.

It has definately gained latitude the past hour. It could be a wobble, but its definately not going any further south.

Hard to say -- Key West radar is shooting through so much heavy rain right now that I'm sure it's not getting the best image. Tampa and Miami long range are both inconclusive. I would say the south movement has stopped, at least, but I'm not sold on NW yet.

I just came in to post on that.

This wobble is significant because the west shift could bust badly if it is what I think it is.

There's a plunging trough over Alabama kinking south above the ridge. This could be weakening the ridge, or it could be bumping it.

Let's not jump on every wobble, but it is possible Katrina just sensed this plunging trough. The only thing to do is see if the ridge responds and picks Katrina back up slightly south of west again as it misses this kinking trough section.

If the trough broke the back of the High we could see recurve and a bad bust of the west shift. NHC has already busted somewhat, so who knows?

If this is an intensification wobble WATCH OUT northern Gulf...

It is WSW - it has been all day. If this continues longer than expected (as it has already) the forecast track will continue to shift west.

Also recon is still reporting WSW motion (according to my knowledge) and they can actually see where the center is and how its moving, but we shall see.

I thought it was going w or wnw a little in the last few segments on the radar. So does mean major trouble for Miss, Alabama, and FL?

Although it may be curving more westward...it appears that the 'nw wobble' is just an illusion caused by that dry slot in the nw eyewall.

It's still moving westward. Look at the entire structure of the storm as it shifts westward.
