1. If you're in the cone, prepare for a direct hit.
Most of my friends down in Cutler Ridge were so sure that Katrina was going to come ashore here in Southern Palm Beach County that they didn't even entertain the possibility that the storm would whack them instead.
2. Don't underestimate the storm.
Too many folks say It's a 1 or a tropical storm and don't consider what that might mean. Was Katrina an Andrew-type storm? No. But for the thousands of people who are flooded out, who don't have power or will have to find an alternative way to get to work for months because of Category 1 Hurricane Katrina, that's small consolation.
3. As a tie-in to the last point, prepare for one Category storm higher than predicted. Storms don't watch the Weather Channel and they don't read this board. Too much can happen at the hours and minutes before landfall. Be safe. Be prepared.

A lot of people like to use Charley as the example of what "in the cone" means. Before that, Irene was a good example. The model guidance was scattered, but still suggested a west coast strike between Fort Myers and Tampa, if anything. Instead, it went to the right of the entire guidance package. I'm not even sure SE FL was in the cone.

How ironic that Katrina was born almost to the day of Andrew’s 13th “Visit to South Florida” Anniversary (Aug 24th 1992) and then she decided to take the scenic route upon land fall and turn South and re-visit some of the areas Andrew laid to waste 13 years ago?
