Lets just be glad this is only a category 1 storm. I have a friend who lives in Marathon and I am a little concerned. They were only expecting a brush from tropical storm like winds, nothing like this.

I think NHC dropped the ball by not issuing hurricane warnings for western Monroe County at the 11pm advisory, but it's not looking that great for the Keys either.

Monroe's the county west of Miami-Dade, right? Katrina is just about to exit through the west side of the county while still a hurricane.

That is somewhat true, I suppose. But why does NHC have the breakpoints if they'll never use them? :P

The flamingos probably wisely departed days and don't need the NHC's help. :D

There are 8 residents in mainland Monroe. Have no idea who they are.

For those who don't know, Monroe County includes the entire Keys, plus a huge mostly uninhabitated part of the Everglades (mainland Monroe) that is the county to the west of Miami-Dade County.

Well, given the facts today, perhaps it isn't.

We still have power here in Big Pine Key. It's blowin' about 40 MPH with gusts in the 60's. School was canceled at 5:00 pm Thursday. Life is a breeze in the Fl. Keys

Gusts reported in the high 70's with sustained in high 40's.
2 sailboats blew into the Tie line at Pine Channel. 1 snapped the mast and the other slid under the line. Good thing!
Some hanger damage at Marathon airport.
All County offices closed . Banks closed 'til noon.
