Lower FL Keys Katrina Impacts

I venture to say that by looking at the radar and intense banding I'm seeing the FL Keys are getting more effects from this storm than Palm Beach and parts of Broward County (northern)...

unbelievable how unpredictable these storms are.

There was a forecast model that predicted this... though not to this effect.. but it did predict the SW bend and thru the Straits...

I think they would have evacuated the FL Keys if they knew it was going to be this close...the upper keys are getting pounded.

I'm saying some prayers for those in the keys tonight. I don't think any of them knew what was coming their way. :(

No they didn't, I spoke with my father in Big Pine at about 7:00 EDT when the only real concern was the "very intense waterspout" but not much else...

Yes and if it continues to move SW (which is *should* move back to the W here at some point), the lower keys will be in for a rude awakening from a "backdoor" hit.

the middle Keys are seeing tremendous winds right now and lots of rain, I bet they did not expect this....

I know the Middle Keys have been under a tropical storm warning. According to the NWS website, they have sustained winds of 14 and gusts to 25. We have family who own a trailer north of Marathon (but they are not there now) . I'd hate to be in that trailer park tonight-- it was rocking during a thunderstorm! :eek:

Wow. I cannot believe that there is virtually nothing in the northern area of the storm. I am now on the northern edge of it. It has made a significant turn SW. The most we got here were some 40 mph winds and 50 mph gusts maybe.

In Key Largo here, I still have my power and DSL, can't believe from watching the radar how close the eye and that inner spiral band is to me. The southwestward motion really rotated this whole thing a lot farther this way than I expected.

Very little lightning, wind roaring. I hear things hitting the house and rain slashing on the roof.

I must have the only animal who is less concerned with the weather than his owner.

This is crazy. The NHC must be going bonkers right now. We dodged a major bullet here it seems. Godspeed to those in the Gulf Coast. I got a bad feeling about this one.

Key West had a lot of convection in a band this afternoon that missed the Upper Keys.

I'm wondering what it's going to be like when that trailing band sets up right over the Keys, looks like not long before we are under a train for a while.
