How would a stall affect intensity or path?

A stall over the Florida Strait will be like our worse nightmare, intensity wise. The path will be the same since this storm is moving slowly and erratic.

I would think what ever is going to take it northward is a weakness/trough. In which if it where to stall or slow down for about a while it could turn more northward then expecting. Also this is a sign that the high is not as strong as it was. In which it is no longer steering the cyclone.

As for how strong? With that mid level shear the nhc was talking about keeping the eye from forming I don't think it will make hurricane with in the next 12 to 18 hours. Its possible if things change fast with this storm. You also have to remember who this really is. Yes this is that pest tropical depression 10.

A stall is more of a nightmare than anyone could imagine. Remember last season? I know the folks in Ft. Pierce do.

Wow. And it's not even September yet.

normally a stall is not conducive to strengthening because of upwelling, but that should not be a problem for Katrina b/c the gulf stream currents move too fast for any significant upwelling to occur

Straits or Gulf Stream

#8 Postby PerfectStorm » Thu Aug 25, 2005 7:24 am

I think quote should be edited to say Gulf Stream Stall not Straits stall unless she is moving way to the SW. Straits are down south of the Keys. 8-)

We went through this "where are the Straits?" thing already. The Strait of Florida is between Miami and the Bahamas as well as between Key West and Cuba -- it's the whole curving channel (strait) that runs along the keys and as far north as the top of the Bahamas.

Intensity... it would not be good. More time over some of the hottest water in the basin=nightmare. For South Florida's sake, you'd better hope this gets moving and gets inland ASAP.

Hmmm I learn something new every day. Didn't know that.

Thanks for noting that Recurve.

You're welcome wxmann. If you want to be real smart, you can also say that what flows through the Strait is the Florida Current, which becomes/joins the Gulf Stream -- so when you are in the Strait, you are not really in the Gulf Stream -- but that terminology distinction is pretty much ignored. :)
