Dooh...Computer Problems Halt Recon Mission

#1 Postby MWatkins » Thu Aug 25, 2005 12:52 am

Well...this sucks...from the 2AM intermediate:

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 50 MPH...85 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. KATRINA IS EXPECTED TO BECOME A HURRICANE ON THURSDAY BEFORE REACHING THE SOUTHEAST FLORIDA EAST COAST. THE RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT THAT WAS ENROUTE TO KATRINA HAS HAD TO ABORT DUE TO COMPUTER PROBLEMS.

Poor Dr Beven...has to write a forecast on a system bearing down on the FL coast without the aid of recon.

Dooh.

So will he have to guess based on satellite? What's a good guess just looking at it now. About 60mph? Higher?

Do they have a back-up plan or we have to wait until the next RECON?

It depends on how severe the problem is. If it's easily fixable... they'll go back up ASAP. Otherwise, we'll have to wait for the next scheduled mission.

They should have ripped the faulty computer out and pitched it out the window as an improvised (albeit ineffective) dropsonde. It would be a good stress reliever for flying all the way out for nothing. :D
