Why was my posting removed?

#1 Postby gtsmith » Wed Aug 24, 2005 9:59 pm

I would like a moderator to contact me and explain why my posting about the strange NWS on-air statement was removed within 45 seconds of posting it???

You should probably contact them directly rather than starting a post about it. They are listed on the forum front page, along with all the other registered members online.

Don't wish to repeat it for fear they'll censor this one too...trust me when I state that I did nothing that violates posting rules.

I don;t know which moderator killed it to know which one to contact, thus this post.

it wasn't anything too bad, just a remark about a warning until sometime tonight like 1159pm or something.

PM any one of them and they'll find out.

I'm sure they had a good reason too.

Edit: Was it something that was already posted???

Don't think so.
He mentioned about how there was something that came up on his tv, saying there was a hurricane warning until tonight at 11:59pm i think.

Edit: And ya, I was the one who replied to you :)

That's it. The hurricane warnings were already posted in the stickied advisory thread. Thats why it was removed.

I read it - nothing seemed wrong - you were just looking for information from people in the area after your hurricane warning message was screwed up . . .

Maybe it was unintentional. Check your e-mails. . .

I'm sure they are, but he didn't post it because of the hurricane warning, he posted because he found it odd that it said on his tv that it said until 11:59pm tonight, and probably was curious why or if someone could explain.

That may have been it, but I think he was trying to figure out why the NWS issued a Hurricane Warning for 58 minutes. :D

The 11:59 has to do with the coding the NWS put in the warnings when they were issued that are displayed on the system over the air.

Here in Memphis, when there are flood watches in effect for days at a time, it usually says expires at 4:47 pm or something like that even though it goes for hours and even days after that time.

I hadn't thought about that. If it was an automated system (which it probably was) that would have caused the message to scroll like that.

Just PMed one of the mods...perhaps they'll explain.

My post was about how odd the interruption was...partial reading of the message and all.

Sounds like just a quick deletion because it was thought to be a hurricane update . . . not actually reading the text close enough.

These things shouldn't happen to such a new poster without explanation. Hope you get it sorted out!

Yeah, most of the systems TV stations purchase are automated and get the expiration and product type data from the very top of the NWS product...

Example...
WUUS52 KMFL 221943 SVRMFL FLC021-222015-

This is at the top of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings. That info tells the crawl system everything it needs so it only uses that information. The WUUS52 tells it is a severe thunderstorm warning, it may also use the "SVRMFL" to determine that as well. the "222015" is the expiration time...the 22nd day of the month at 2015z, 4:15 pm EDT. The crawl system grabs that data and fills in the gaps with it, creating the entire crawl you see on TV. "MFL" is the issuing office, Miami. "FLC021" is the FIPS code, which says which state and county are affected.

The person at the station can correct the data if it is wrong, but its all grabbed automatically from that.
