Kevin, I agree with you about people either not realizing the implications of a storm/hurricane or the fact they may just not care. I think that some people lost the point of your post, however.
The main point being that unless there are HARD facts in regard to the severity of a storm then we all may need to chill out a little with our predictions of MAJORS and the location of such. The people in Fla are a little gun shy by now, based on the destruction of last years season. Based on this, even a little hint of a "major" might send these folks into a real tizzy, creating mass panic and total chaos. Since this group has over 6000+ members not including those people who just lurk and read without registering we all need to understand that many people take these "predictions" to heart. Even with a disclaimer.(hoping I got your point here, :D )
For those of you who had nothing better to do then to bash/blast Kevin for his thoughtful and very heartfelt post......Let me say this. I became a member last year and used to post off and on, ask questions ect... I RARELY do it now. Why not??? Because there have been SO MANY of you who bash, make rude comments, ect that even I am a bit fearful to post. The people bashing are not only new members but old members as well. It has got quite ugly in my opinion. Image

Sadly it seems worse today than ever, maybe people are just edgy, I dunno, but it's sad.

Thank you for putting it so well. Please don't be fearful to post! If the best are fearful...who ultimately wins (and I mean wins in the true way, not the competitive way)?

Naw, I just read now. Usually I sound like such a dumb blonde that I have a target on my forhead LOLOL But if I left myself open to bashing, I might have to show my true southern redneck self and that would be a very ugly picture and not ladylike in the least. Plus I would probably get banned for life! 8-)

Gotta agree with you there MBP. It's too bad that things have seemingly changed so drastically this season compared to the past. Another poster said earlier (AFMet, I believe) that this particular board is designed intentionally to be different than other WX boards where negative comments and rude remarks are the norm instead of the exception.

On S2K, the mission and vision has always been - I believe - that everyone will respect everyone else without exception. Unfortunately, a few "exceptions" have crept in to a place where their style is obviously contrary to the intended culture of S2K.

NOW you see why I post at the games forum instead ! We are all so nice to one another there and it is obviously not anything to do with age either.Very diverse little group we have going on there.
I think with so many posters, that it is easy to miss the smart comments. A very big job for the mods. But I am honestly ashamed that, in the past, the very same people I felt such great respect for are now some of the people who are being so disrespectful to others.

:D :D

LMAO guys. I'm not afraid to admit I want the experience. I am a homeowner and I have 3 kids and a dog so it's not like I'm not aware of the dangers. The worst I've ever seen was Hurricane Florence in 1988 which was the last hurricane to actually hit New Orleans and give us winds > 60mph. I think I could hang with 90-105mph and enjoy it. I've only been waiting about 35 years to see something to scare me (was 1 when Betsy rolled through in 1965). I don't wishcast for anything but I do silently cheer from time to time ;).

But seriously, if a Cat 4 or 5 hit New Orleans, I'd make out like a king (well maybe not, but you know...). I live in an area where the land is worth way more than the older homes like I live in, so if my house was to be devastated (of course I wouldn't stay for that kind of threat), I could end up with a house for double the value with the insurance money - which oh btw, I'm getting raped by anyway this year to the tune of $1700 for hazard and $1350 for flood.

PS - if anyone thinks I'm a freak for being honest, I'll take that as a compliment.

MBP,

You do raise some good points though. Kevin simply posted some text that didn't deserve to generate the heat he got. I'm sure the mods are looking at the spiteful members and will weed them out in time. They're pretty tolerant but some people do cross the line when disagreeing. I tried to set up a statecaster/wishcaster thread for Katrina so the fighting and hate could be isolated to one place, but I got shot down (which was the right thing to do).

Come on back and post more though.

IMO, it's a very nice board as it has been since I opened my account.

The problem is, what to do about posts like the ones (back in July) that wished for Emily to become a Cat. 5 (including the whining after it weakened before landfall) or the inevitable "better them than us" attitude of some members who have some kind of (totally understandable) phobia to tropical systems? Everyone will be offended sooner or later.

What's more important? Respecting the opinion of the so-called people I disagree with, or respecting the coastal residents's feelings about hurricanes and storms? That's the dilemma with this type of "free" boards.

Steve, I won't hold it against you. At least you are honest about it. But I would suggest, careful for what you wish for. But I understand that adrenaline rush. You sound like my ex......he wanted to go tie himself to a bridge in the middle of Fran, just to FEEL it.

As long as one admits they WANT it and not "forecast" something where there are no facts to support it. No reason to freak people out with no basis, other then the DESIRE to have it heading that way...

Hey People. Kevin made a thoughtful post and he got a lot of abuse over it. Maybe it's been posted before, but it's still his opinion and therefore admissible on the board. Some of the retorts are not admissible.

I don't usually stick my nose into the technical discussions as I don't claim to know that much about tropical weather. But I do know about people and this thread is getting locked.

Everybody calm down.
