This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Is Katrina forming an eye?

The visible picture looks creepy. Like a baby hurricane starting to form. All it needs to do is start wrapping up.

No, she's not forming an eye.

Typically, you only get an eye with hurricanes, usually cat 2 or higher.

It's just a center of circulation right now.

Nice symetrical circulation, but there's no core to this thing.

Will be an interesting race to see if this can develop a proper core before it gets to Florida.

It'll take a while, especially while it's that elongated. Radial symmetry will be essential.

ALmost everyone, including NHC, says it is strengthening and expected to continue to do so. On what basis do you make the statement that she is steadily weakening??

it is fooling you....when storms strengthen rapidly in the early stages, the convection will die off and then come back so look for it to come back later this evening and tonight. The circulation continues to get tighter and outflow is improving...and we all know what is ahead of it...the Gulf Stream...

As Stewart said in the discussion, dry air has gotten to Katrina. Until and if the dry air can be mixed, then we are prime for intensification. If Katrina constantly has to deal with these dry air issues, then significant strenghtening won't happen. If it get rids of it, we have a good chance of a minimal cane (cat 1) at landfall.

I wouldn't call it weakening now, but holding steady. No real strengthening is happening though at this time.

Katrina appears to be "running into" a strengthening ridge and has begun, imo, her turn to the NW and then WNW. She also appears to be mixing in the dry air pretty well and there doesn't look to be that much of it around her or in front of her projected path. With the Gulf Stream and improving conditions to her West I will not be at all surprised for her to become a CAT1/Strong CAT1 prior to her initial FL landfall, probably very close to or just South of Ft. Lauderdale.

An eye is appearing on the SW tip of Abaco Island on Miami long range.

This storm has the sweeping hazy look of a storm about to bomb...
