How are they going to get 60pmh gusts when Katrina only has 45mph winds? I just don't see that happening unless strengthens dramatically.

I VERY seriously doubt that... it's barely going to be a storm when it re-emerges unless it strengthens a lot more than forecast.

A rainy day with some gusty winds... nothing they've never seen before.

well its going to streinghting, its not going to stay at 45mph all they way to land fall. If substained winds when hit land fall a 75mph its possible tampa might get 65 wind gust.

No way...you'll see more action from a summer-time afternoon T-storm

Slight exxageration. Same summer T-storm. Come on. Tampa is expected to possibly be under TS watch later. Also look at those models!

60+ just won't happen....maybe gusts to 40mph, but that'll be about it. Kat mostly likely won't make it to cat 1 status before landfall, and even if she does, her winds will be in a very small location. She just won't have enough to give Tampa trouble. The only way is if she starts moving west NOW, crosses Florida quickly and then re-intesifies in the gulf before turing to the north and northeast.

The forcaster on duty just was making and educated guess, Btw the Tampa bay area extends all the way down to Sarasota from what I've heard. He could mean in the southern forecast areas.

I agree that 60 mph seems unlikely at least in the Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg area. Maybe 35 to 40 sustained and gusts up to 50. It will depend on how fast it moves, where it moves, and what intensity initial landfall is.

Should lead to TS advisories though, but I think 60 mph is probably a bit too high at this time.

I think it is a little high also...

Perhaps they mean in extreme squalls...
But if this thing were to blow up just off SW Florida then this forecast
would not surprise me...but we'll have to wait and see.

Also, if you look at where the official NHC forecast Katrina to make a 2nd landfall (around Apalachicola), then those living on FL West Coast (Tampa Bay northward) will likely experience at least TS conditions for a couple of days due to the fact the Katrina will not be moving very fast...
