Weather Sensationalism and the local news

#1 Postby DAVE440 » Mon Aug 22, 2005 7:01 pm

Heard a teaser for tonights late news bout an hour ago.

"Tropical Depression 11 has formed. Find out if it will threaten south florida at 11."

Course its Jose now...but you know where I'm going with this.

Nowhere near S.Fla and not a chance in a million for it to come this way...but they gotta get people concerned enough to watch their broadcast.

Anything to get viewers I suppose....

BTW....for Bond Fans...Moonraker just started on AMC.

Its all about the ratings people!! Everybody knows that people in FL are worried about anything in the tropics. So if a storm forms, whether its a thousand miles away, or assuredly going to make landfall hundreds of miles away in another country as in this case, the local stations are ready to jump because they know viewers will tune in, though the people promoting the newscast and producing it know 100% that it won't affect their DMA.

Its a ratings gimmick, thats all.

Call the station, they are in the phonebook, and tell them you don't like it. I've called the Miami news directors when they do that "teaser" kind of BS over something important. They may not admit anything when you call) but if they get 50 or 100 calls after they run one of those promos, they'll think about it.

It's bad enough when they do it with a sports score, but with a tropical storm, it's idiotic. Especially when there is that wave to the east that may bring severe weather to Florida, hyping Jose could confuse people and tell them to stop paying attention.

But you can't complain here if you won't bother to complain to the people who are doing it.

Well Neil Frank barely mentioned it tonight.

Didn't watch KPRC-2 though, they overhype everything.

It is not Journalism

#7 Postby Fego » Tue Aug 23, 2005 1:06 am

I believe that is in the producer's nature to do that. It is like a generic style that is learned somewhere between college and the station. IMO is more than a gimmick, is a lie. Hey, that's not Journalism. They believe that is correct, that they really are getting the viewers attention. A classic example: "After this break, we will tell you who is the artist that got involved in a car accident". That would be a normal teaser except that at the same time, they were showing the artist face! Got it?. I'm a weekend tv anchorman in Univision Puerto Rico and we have the same problem. Every time I see those kind of teasers I rewrite it.

Local ABC26 meteorologist Bruce Katz (WGNO New Orleans) just said - with the appropriate amount of hype in his voice - that TD12 WILL become TS Katrina and WILL become Hurricane Kartina and WILL be situated 240 miles ESE of New Orleans on Sunday.

Hyped it to the max!!! Especially his use of the word "WILL", without any words related to "possibly", "maybe", or even "probably"...

Go figure.

Carl on Channel 4 has some concern in his voice. But, he is not panicking. I wonder what Bob Breck is saying. I missed him. If anyone is to downplay something, it would be him.

The hype has been going on in the bay area since June with all the local Mets with thier super dooper Vortex radars and new and improved Titan forcasting tools. Don't get me wrong after last years hurricane season it may all be warranted. Although everyones got thier double doppler 10,000. and what not, but its a little overkill.

They're doing it here in Southern Wisonsin after last week's tornadoes, too. The teasers say something like "thunderstorms will be possible again later this week, find out if they'll be severe tonight at 10"...etc. etc.

Breck showed the NHC track and said that since storms"never" follow that track, we won't have to be concerned until Monday, which he then called "decision day" Make up your mind, oh strange one...

Bob Breck is an old school New Orleans meteorologist. He gets very hyper and panicky. Last year for Ivan, he was the one on the air telling people not to evacuate because they were going to be stuck in traffic in the height of the storm and basically told the Governor of LA off on the air because of the failed contraflow plan and the gridlock traffic.
