Katrina and New Orleans

#1 Postby Praxus » Tue Aug 23, 2005 4:52 pm

Derek's latest graphic has TD 12 heading right for New Orleans

http://www.nwhhc.com/atl122005graphics.html

Don't want to think of how strong it may be by the time it makes its gulf landfall...wherever that is. Lets all hope Derek's not too accurate on this one !

If you do an extrap from there, that's just about east of the mouth of the river...just east of where Cindy came in. Looks like the LA/MS border.

with the ridge building then thats not such a bad forecast and i think a LA/TX hit may be more likely than a panhandle hit so if i was in N.O i would be watching closely

Someone in La. please post what our local weather gods are saying about it in the 5p.m. broadcast. I'm not near a TV and I'm interested to see if they'll continue to play it down.

Thanks

Seems they've (or at least one) has taken a 180 on that...

Bobby really needs to find a new job or retire. According to him, New Orleans has this huge dome around it like in The Truman Show. I stopped watching Bob a couple months ago and switched to WWL. WWL's website is so much better, I find their news is better, and I find they're mets are more reliable....just my opinion.

Right now we have to watch if pre-Katrina continues toward South Florida or follow a more northerly turn forecasted by some computer models. For now don't get into one forecast and just keep the eye on the storm.

NOLA is immune to major hurricanes. The only ones that ever hit us are weak cat 1's or TS's.

Yea, tell that to Andrew or Betsy. Well, I don't believe Andrew had too much of an affect on NOLA. Where I'm at, we had gusts well over 100mph. We've just been waaaaaay too luck over the past few years.

There is two models that take it out to sea. Number one the Cliper always takes every storm out to sea.

LBAR had a bad run.

Andrew missed us by a ton. Betsy was closer but still missed us to the west. Just off the top of my head, Camille missed, Georges missed, Ivan missed, Elena missed, Frederic missed. Always close, never a hit, we're immune.

There was a small town near Huntsville Alabama that had dodged tornados for decades, the residents swore that they were immune because that town was between two rivers.

in the 1990's they got popped with a whopping F-5. Let's home the same hurricane-wise does not happen to New Orleans.

Zach,

I know you work for the competition so I'll take that shot at Bob as a joke. ;)

I'm not sure how old you are, but usual denial isn't really appropos for Bob except maybe the last 2 years. What's funny to me is that he really used to be the main met in town that discussed the tropics and was always worried about a hit (over-worried usually). Something happened where he's changed his delivery and strategy.

Personally, I happen to trust Bob over anyone in town, but I also like Carl. I was thrilled he replaced Dave Barnes who I didn't like whatosever. I also thought Nash Roberts was and remains ridiculously overrated. I like what you Channel 4 guys put out to the public, so keep up the good work. However, no way in hell will I ever register for that website. No tv site is going to get my info even if I already know some fake logins I could use if I wanted to. The news site used to be free access, then they started with that mandatory registration thing. They actually had a popup at one point telling me that they needed my information so they could tailor and target their advertising. Huh? Not in this lifetime.

But outside of that, you guys are okay by me.

I think there's a misconception on the part of some people that NO is hit by big hurricanes more often than it really is. Of course, we in LA know it doesn't get hit very often. But, the thing is, when it does get hit, it's really bad. Since 1900, only two storms have directly crossed over New Orleans as full fledged hurricanes, 1915 and 1947. Most storms that hit south of New Orleans have ended up going east of the city, the 1915 storm being an exception, and it's very difficult to get a hurricane into NO from the southeast or east southeast like the 1947 storm. Of course, Besty was far enough west to spare NO a complete disaster, but it was bad enough. Before 1915, you've got to go way back into the 1800's to find any more serious storms that came as close as the 1915 hurricane, back to 1860 and 1855, and the two storms in 1860 and the one in 1855 all passed east of NO on a NNE heading. September 9/10 will mark the 40th anniversary of Betsy, September 19th will mark the 58th anniversary of the 1947 storm, and September 30th will make the 90th anniversary of the 1915 storm. NO is definitely not immune to major hurricanes, but you are right, lately, it has been spared quite a few times. Maybe this year it will get hit, but it could just as easily be another 20 years.

Okay, well, since you are complaining, come move closer to the coast like Houma, and come have your fun. Because just like skysummit said, Terrebonne Parish was no picnic with Andrew. I rode out Andrew in Terrebonne Parish only about 25 miles from the eye and it was pretty intense. And I was not born for Betsy, but I know things were not pretty down there the day after. Much of the city of New Orleans was under water.

Looks like a weak cat 2 to me. Like I said, we get hit all the time by weak canes or TS's like Cindy, but never any majors.
