How would you solve the broken borders issue?

Everone has an opinion.

I have an idea, but it is not pleasant for all folk. Plus, you are opening a can of heat with this thread. Too much racial bias....

Isn't it about nationality, not race?

This thread has nothing to do with race. It is a security issue.

I have a solution:

Make immigration free and legal for all Mexican citizens with clean criminal backgrounds. Give them free work visas. This will cause the vast majority of immigration to go through established border crossings. This will give us the ability to know who has entered the country, and it will cut the flow of illegal immigration to almost nothing, making it easy to pick out the dangerous criminals coming in at places other than border crossings.

Well, I say build a fence along the southern border. The fence couldn't cost more than the jobs illegals are taking and all the benefits they receive from the US when they get here.

Terrorists are getting in thru the Southern boarders too.

Okay, Canadians too. :)

In fact, I'd really say that it should be effective for all North Americans, from Panama to Canada.

Without the illegals, the costs of nearly everything would go up a lot. Make them legal, and then they'll still be working for cheap but they'll be paying taxes like the rest of us. They all still pay sales taxes and property taxes anyway, which is from where most of the local services they use are paid for anyway.

Terrorists are getting in thru the Southern boarders too.

I keep hearing this stated as fact. Where is the evidence?

Interestingly every one of the 9/11 hijackers entered legally under their real names. Some of them overstayed their visas, but that's a separate problem.

Build a fence. You must not have visited the the border recently. They already have fences.

please define illegals? And who is "They"?

Are you answering my question?

If you are, then it reads as if what you're saying is that what is wrong with the Mexicans is what is wrong with Canadians?

Okay, so let me try again -- what is wrong with Mexicans and Canadians?

Illegals are those people from any country who enter the US or sneak into our country without a passport, working papers or a visa with the intention of hiding and getting jobs here.

I am not talking about Mexicans or Canadians. I am talking about their borders. Terrorists are coming in thru both borders and they are not Mexican or Canadian, so lets keep nationalities out of this. This is about borders.

When did they erect the fences? (Asking, not doubting)

I didn't see much of a fence either time I went to Laredo (God knows I wouldn't go there now with what's going on over there). I crossed the bridge and looked out over the river -- dirt bank on one side, dirt bank on the other, and river flowing in the middle. Furthermore, there was no fence at the second checkpoint 20 miles in either. However, that was before 9/11. I haven't been back to Mexico since.

In 2003 I walked from Laredo to Nuevo Laredo. As soon as I crossed the white line across the middle of the bridge, I was accosted by drug dealers galore trying to sell me every kind of drug you can imagine, with the US border patrol guy standing right there. They must think I'm stupid. :D

Anyway I got across to Nuevo Laredo, got swarmed by Mexicans trying to sell me drugs and trinkets, since I was the only white guy (and therefore the only obvious Gringo) in the crowd, and I crossed the street and walked right back to Laredo. Border patrol guy at the immigration window says "how long were you in mexico" I said, "about 5 minutes". He laughed and waved me by. :D

I thought I remembered seeing a fence, but I can't be sure. Who wants to live in a walled-off country, though? How depressing that would be.

It sounds like it's a mess down there now, with all the MX cops being killed and the increase in crime. LOL! Yeah, I hated the barrage of street vendors trying to get me to buy stuff that I didn't need or want.
