Olivia Newton-John’s boyfriend missing
Patrick McDermott left on fishing trip June 30
Updated: 2:05 p.m. ET Aug. 22, 2005
NEW YORK - The Coast Guard says it is investigating the disappearance of Olivia Newton-John’s longtime boyfriend, who failed to return from an overnight fishing trip off the California coast seven weeks ago.
Patrick Kim McDermott, 48, left San Pedro, 20 miles south of Los Angeles, June 30 on an overnight fishing trip. The Los Angeles Police Department said McDermott has been listed as missing.
Coast Guard officer Nathan Henise told The Associated Press Monday that McDermott was last seen on the fishing vessel and that his personal items were found on the boat.
“We’re treating it as a missing person case,” Henise told the AP. “Everyone is being interviewed, everyone on the boat.”
The Associated Press was attempting to reach Newton-John.
Authorities said McDermott’s family became concerned when he didn’t attend a July 6 event. They contacted the Coast Guard after his car was found in the marina’s parking lot on July 11.
McDermott, a cameraman, and Newton-John, 56, have been dating for nine years. The singer appeared in the 1978 movie “Grease” opposite John Travolta.

*snicker*
You'd think I'd be a prime suspect.
Haven't left the state in the past two month, so there! Besides, I have a solid alibi for that entire weekend.
Here's a pic of him. Great looking couple. I hope non-tragic turns up soon. http://www.smh.com.au/news/people/love- ... click=true

He's not young and blonde.
Actually though, the article did state that others had been looking for him. But they're just now going public with the information.
Olivia:
Not sure why his family didn't want to make it public earlier. You'd think there would be power in numbers and the more people aware that he's missing, the greater the chances of someone coming forward to say if they've seen him.

Olivia:
"As you are all now aware, my dear friend Patrick McDermott, who I love very much, is missing. He was last seen on a charter fishing boat on June 30th. Out of respect for his family, I have chosen not to make any public statements until now. For those of us who know and love him, it has been a truly heart breaking experience and we have chosen to deal with it privately. I have offered my full cooperation to the authorities who are continuing to investigate the circumstances of his disappearance and we are hopeful that eventually we will find some answers. I am grateful for all of those who have expressed their concern. I would simply ask for your continued support and prayers for his safety and well-being and for that of his family."

I swear that was my first thought, in a joking way. Was gonna type - alright Shawn, what did you do with him? Let him go now....
Hope they find him ASAP. Wonder why we're just now hearing about his disappearance too....he's been gone 7 weeks.
Self edit.....just read ONJ's message...

hmmmm....
If this was a charted boat, and the vessel's master was licensed, he or she is required to notify the CG in the event a passenger is killed, injured, goes missing while underway, etc.
I'd like to get the other passengers and crew in seperate rooms for some "interviews."
Anyone know the name of the boat or if this was a recreational or commercial outing?

I'd wonder more about the ex-wife before I'd wonder about ONJ.
There are reports that he was distressed about having to make alimony payments to her, plus authorities have mentioned suicide as a possibility. I'm thinking, "Who could date a woman like Livvy and get depressed?"
Furthermore, ONJ was in Oz at the time of his disappearance. She got frustrated with the progress of the search and hired Gavin de Becker, the same PI who helped her resolve her problem with stalker Michael Perry back in the early 80's. Perry ended up killing his parents, cousins, and a nephew.
I think there's a chance that this could be a case like Spaulding Gray. Didn't he go missing a number of times while sulking off in a depressed funk? I think there's a chance that McDermott may have been the type to "disappear" for a while so he could clear his head and avoid letting his family see him in such a dark state of mind. This could be one of those times when the darkness took over and he couldn't pull himself out of it.

Haven't seen the name of the boat yet. But what I read said that it was an overnight fishing trip with 24 other people on board, none of whom knew McDermott. He also reported paid his fare before the boat returned to port. And, some witnesses claimed they say him leave the boat after it docked.
