Flood of '55
This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of the flood of '55 that devasted parts of New England. The flood of 55 was caused by 2 hurricanes hitting New England within days of each other. Hurricane Connie hit the 2nd of week of August when Hurricane Diane hit New England on August 19th. My parents grew up in Putnam, CT, which was devasted by flooding caused by this flood. Thisl link is from the Norwich Bulletin on the Special Section they have on the flood.

The Courant looks like they have a pretty good section on this...

I remember hearing my mom and dad mention this a couple times...they grew up in Western Mass during that time. Things like water almost coming up to the houses...water highest they've ever seen...stuff like that. Never looked into it much.
Just checked out some of the high water photos. Seeing shots of a couple towns in Northern CT that I've driven through many times (Thompsonville/Enfield) is pretty wild. Looks like class 3 rapids going through there. You don't really think about anything like THAT happening in those parts nowadays.
