This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Questions concerning NAO and other factors

#1 Postby EDR1222 » Sat Aug 20, 2005 8:54 pm

Just wanted to see what some of the pro mets on here think about what is going on in the Atlantic and what we might expect with the NAO phase and some of the other factors that influence the tropics as we near September.

Thoughts and comments by anyone are welcome.

The NAO does play a role in the general pattern across the CONUS.

A positive phase of the NAO creates more ridging over the Eastern US, Above normal heights, and higher pressure. The negative phase, the exact opposite. A negative phase could mean more development due to lower pressure but more tracks out to sea would be possible because of more troughiness. In general, the NAO isn't a big factor in formation of tropical cyclones but more in the track of them.

The MJO is a known factor to affect the development of Tropical Cyclonea. Goes in wet and dry phases. Wet Phase condusive for convection, dry phase, not.

Hope I helped some!
