The first (and now second) of many

#1 Postby clfenwi » Sat Aug 20, 2005 5:51 pm

I have just posted the first article of many that together will serve as a guide to models used in tropical cyclone forecasting. If I follow through on the thoughts in my head, this guide to models will be part of a yet larger set of guides pertaining to tropical cyclones (particularly Atlantic basin hurricanes).

Right now I am focused on content, rather than style, so the pages will be bare-boned for the time being.

There are a few other guides to models out there, but there aren't any that are to my full satisfaction. I hope to provide a one-stop resource that gives people a sense of the history behind the model, how it works, comments on its performance, as well as links to the output. Also, I am hoping to strike a happy balance in acessibility such that is informative to both people inside and outside the meteorology field (to assist students of the former, all of the references I've used as well as other sources are scrupulously provided.

My first article is a write-up of the Climatology and Persistence (CLIPER) model. It can be viewed at http://hurricaneguide.beplaced.com/CLIPER.html.

Feedback in this space is invited :D

Good summary. I'd love to read something like that on some of the more dynamic models.

Thanks for the compliments everyone.

Just posted my second write-up, this one is on the NHC98 model:

http://hurricaneguide.beplaced.com/NHC98.html

I'm working my way up the ladder as it were. I've no time-table laid out, but I do expect my next write-up to be on the Beta and Advection models, followed by the LBAR. Either the GFS or GFDL will follow that.

Very nice write-up on the NHC chain, I had no idea that they went back that far! Your progression sounds like a good one, can't wait to read it!
