TC landfall on US Gulf Coast - 8/20 or later formation

#1 Postby dwg71 » Tue Aug 16, 2005 9:51 am

Since 1995 (what many consider to be change in weather pattern) there have been 16 Tropical storms that have made US Gulf Coast Landfall when forming after 8/20.

1995 - None
1996 - Josephine
1997 - None
1998 - Charley, Frances, Hermine,
1999 - Harvey
2000 - Helene, Gordon
2001 - Gabrielle
2002 - Edouard, Fay, Hanna, Isidore
2003 - Grace, Henri
2004 - Matthew, Frances (2nd landfall)

There have been 3 Cat 1 or 2

1995 - None
1996 - None
1997 - None
1998 - Earl, Georges
1999 - None
2000 - None
2001 - None
2002 - Lili
2003 - None
2004 - None

There have been 2 Majors

1995 - Opal
1996 - None
1997 - None
1998 - None
1999 - None
2000 - None
2001 - None
2002 - None
2003 - None
2004 - Ivan

Just some interesting facts about the past decade for those of us that live on the GOM. For those who live in Texas, we've had 0 hurricanes make landfall in our state by storms that have formed after the 20th of August.
Overdue or too late in season, time will tell.

FYI - I used the 20th just because I thought that would be the earliest day of our next storm.

Thanks for taking the time to post your stats, but there are several errors.

Gordon, Gabrielle, and Isidore were tropical storms at landfall, not hurricanes.

Georges and Lili were not major hurricanes at landfall.

Bret was a major hurricane in 1999 and made landfall in South Texas, even though it formed on August 18th.

Edit was made. Thanks for the info, the site I used didnt give status at landfall. I noticed Bret, but didnt include because it was prior to my start date.

Didn't Frances last year make a second Florida landfall along the panhandle near the Apalachicola area as a Tropical Storm?

Just to add a little info to above stats.
As we get later the numbers look like this.

Sept 1 or later. 17/4/2
Sept 15 or later 8/3/1
Oct 1 or later 2/0/0
Oct 8 to end of season 0/0/0

During current (past decade) weather pattern it would appear the average for US gulf coast strikes for the following break points are:

August 20 - average 2.1 storms, .5 Hurricanes, & .2 majors
Sept 1 - average 1.7 storms, .4 hurricanes & .2 major
Sept 15 - average .8 storms, .3 hurricnaes & .1 major
October 1 - average .2 storms, 0 hurricanes & 0 majors

Edited to add: THESE #'S APPLY ONLY TO LAST DECADE
Octber 8 to end of season there have not been any named storms to make landfall on US Gulfcoast soil that formed at or after the 8th of Octber. And the latest hurricane formation date was 9/27 which is also the date of latest major (Opal).

Just some more interesting facts for all of those who live on the Gulf Coast. Will 05 buck these stats, time wil tell.
