a land falling hurricane???
Ours has now we have to be open for the fire, emt, police, ect.Times is changing for sure. Its in our "new"policy handbook that we are open and all mangers and crew has to be on time before the storm hits. The new stores has BIG generators that can keep a store running for 4 days!!!
I asked the manger what winds can the store stand up to,he said over 200mph!!
If,a cat 5 storm was coming I would like to be running to the next state, but I guess I would stay and open the store with my wife and my daughter would go with my parents.FOR one thing is sure we will be the only fast food joint open!!!!!

I have not heard of any business that would force it's employees to stay and work through a hurricane, Emergency services surely are always on hand, but private business's are taking a chance if they force employees to stay during a major storm, if anything happens to the employees they could be in for one major law suit.

Do you remember hurricane Charley came thought last year and we were put on mandatory vac?Bob Evan restaurant,Waffle house,Hardee's were all still open.Matter in-fact Waffle house fired all the employees because none showed up for work.
I was mad because Hardee's was calling my wife into work and the hurricane command center in Conway told me there is nothing that they can do to close them down. The only thing was he said the insurance would not pay for any damages because they are open.I totally agree there will be alot of law suits if business stay open.

Yes SC is a right to work state, however as a manager I will say that any manager that knowingly and willfully endangers the welfare of his employees does not need to be in the position that he or she is in. A manager's most valuable asset is his employees, and if he doesn't treat them with the respect and dignity that they deserve they will not be there when he needs them the most. The reputation that he or she would be building will also follow them around.

I do not see how a business can force people to stay if they choose to leave during such circumstances.
I know what your saying. Before Charley came NMB police came to ever house on my street telling us we need to go to the school or leave.Me and my wife had to explained to them that my wife had to work. And they were like no one will be open, but when I told them the store was going to be open they looked at us like we were crazy!!!But I do know they were surprise to see that store open the next morning!!!!

When Hurricane Dennis made landfall on Sunday, July 10 about 100 miles east of where I live and work, I chose to stay out of town until Monday because the place I was staying was under an inland hurricane warning (Dennis came within 40 miles of there). Although I called and left a message on my boss's voice mail regarding my plans, when I got home and called in, I was brutely reprimanded and told to "take the rest of the day off as vacation". Never mind that the road home was littered with fallen trees and branches or that we experienced tropical storm force winds where we were. Never mind that our governer said "stay off the roads". I never got to explain my reasoning. It cost me vacation and I was viewed as irresponsible. No matter, protecting my family was my top priority and I wasn't about to get them out in tropical storm conditions.

I know
Hospitals have to stay open during a hurricane. When I worked on New Orleans I spent many days sheltering and working at a hospital. The last one had policy that they would evac for a slow moving 2 or a 3 and above but it never happened. I think it would cost them too much money to evac and we all know what that means.

BUD, I know exactly what you are saying. The golf course my hubbie works at was open all the way up til right before before Charlie hit land, thank God only as a cat one.The ONLY reason they closed is because the sky tram over the water way was swaying so much there would be no way to get back to the 17 side of it. I know for a FACT there was NO ONE playing golf and this was NOT the policy of the company but a decision from the "HEAD PRO" who, by the way is not a class A LMAO. Maybe it is a NMB kind of thing??? haha And you can beleive I was raising cain the entire time!

We leave about one day before the base evacuation order is given out. (There is a sequence of events that occurs every time, so we know when the evac order will happen.) And then we dont come back until the all-clear is given. All of our evacuation expenses (mileage, hotel, food) are paid, so I dont feel too bad about that.

if a hurricane is coming you need to stay home and protect life and property and tell those guys to take a flying leap.

I know where that place is and it should be the first place to be closed when a hurricane cames!!!!
I also know when Hurricane Bonnie,Fran, bertha, were coming very close that everybody would leave.I wish our governor would make some new laws about hurricanes.

IMO I think that many of the businesses that do not close down, are only looking at the fact that this is a tourist area and that they cannot make enough without staying open to survive. The silly thing is that they will not generate any income during the time of a evacuation and are actually losing money by staying open and paying the costs of runnoing the business with no return.

you obviously don't own a business....
if you don't like the rules of your employer... you have 2 options.
either go to work somwhere else or start your own business...
