Still having weather here in Biloxi with 30 mph wind gusts. Very enjoyable. I was outside just now and it thundered. It sounded like
an artillery battle because it started as a low rumble that went on and on.

Just heard from my aunt in Ponchatoula. She said her fence fell and she might have minor roof damage, but they made it through all right, although it was a scary night! My uncle from Hammond was able to check out his house from the outside and there were no trees on it, but he thinks there might have been flooding. But seems like everyone is fine.

Grand Isle came out reasonably well all things considered. There's major damage and surge flooding but it's nothing like Mexico Beach after Michael. Many structures are still standing. I think people would have expected a lot worse. Whether because they barely missed the inner eye wall, rigorous building codes, or the earthen berms out in the ocean disrupted the surge, they came out about as well as you could have hoped.

I have heard that sort of long-rolling thunder in a couple tropical storms. Perhaps it has something to do with the strong winds scattering the sound waves or something.

Not sure how many live up north on the forums but look out for record flooding from Ida. Euro is showing almost a foot of rain right over my house in 2 days...all this falls in the span of 24 hours. this area is drenched from a wet summer, Fred and Henri dumping inches here as well. I already got a foot of rain the past 2 months. This could be one of the worst flooding events for a lot of areas in the mid atlantic and northeast

Funny story:

My #2 son and his wife moved from east coast FL to NJ because she was PETRIFIED of being in a hurricane.

Truth be told, they've endured more storms (in the form of TC's) in NJ than have struck where they lived in FL!!!

Can't help but laugh every time a storm goes over their house (Middlesex County, NJ),

Truth be told, they've endured more storms (in the form of TC's) in NJ than have struck where they lived in FL!!!

This reminds me of when my family moved to Florida from Long Island in 1976 when I was a kid. Just before we moved, Hurricane Belle hit us (hence the username), and soon after we arrived in the Tampa Bay area it snowed, so despite living in Florida the last hurricane I was in for the longest time happened in New York and the last snow I saw was in Florida.

On a good note, at least so far, there seems to have been very few deaths during hurricane Ida. 2 so far, does anyone know just how populated the region worst hit by the surge and Cat 4 winds was? Perhaps this is a result of very successful evacuation & rescue operations, or on the contrary limited access to the worst hit areas? Time will tell but so far this seems to be a silver lining, maybe Ida was more about material destruction but with a low death toll instead, hopefully.

I think it's too soon to say, they are still working their way through the worst-hit areas.

The NYTimes said 3 deaths in their most recent update, 1 of which it said was "a person driving around New Orleans" - hopefully not some amateur stormchaser that had no idea what they were doing.

Usually, deaths post-hurricane are heart attacks during the cleanup, carbon monoxide poisoning, and electrocution. However, walking around floodwaters is never a good idea but plenty of peeps do it. This guy was attacked by an alligator and as alligators like to do, they take their prey and leave the scene.

—Tied as the strongest Louisiana landfall in terms of wind, and only behind Katrina for the lowest pressure. This also makes it one of the strongest CONUS landfalls on record

I'm not feeling good about the flooding event starting tonight into thursday for my area and all over PA and the surrounding areas...almost all the models show me as ground zero with 6-11 inches of rain right now. GFS, NAM, UKMET and Euro are all showing huge totals like that all over south central PA...

Winds also could stay sustained over 30mph in some areas because Ida is going to get a boost in strength and pressure will actually drop

Absolutely! My cousin died about 8 days after Michael when he was trying to cut down a half fallen tree by himself. There were a lot of deaths in Bay County in the days after Michael hit unfortunately. I hope people are careful after Ida and avoid the fatal mistakes that are too common after hurricane disasters.

Another issue is that much of this area just got tons of rain from Henri less than 2 weeks ago. This could be a significant flood event for PA and NJ.
