Yeah Ida is going over flat areas of Cuba so disruption would be minimal but now it's about to go over the mountains. Won't last long but should knock it down slightly.

other radars show it still intact, but not as circular as it was

Seconded, and relevant.

As intensity crept toward 5 and the NHC line kept inching closer (yes, I know, in both cases that's not what to look at), I started having the evac itch. However, right now they're suggesting a collapse to Cat 1 by the time it passes me, so that's a bit more acceptable.

Looking like an even shorter trip over Cuba than I anticipated, part of the eyewall is already emerging into the Gulf as I type this.

MGC wrote:Indeed, NOLA is in the crosshairs. Ida could be another Katrina only passing west of the city instead of east of the city. I would not be surprised if Ida's wind field expands like Katrina's did and with it an even higher storm surge than currently forecast. If I were living on the south shore of Lake P I'd evacuate ASAP. New Orleans is not the place to ride out a major hurricane. 1500+ souls were lost in the New Orleans area with Katrina, lets not have that happen again......MGC

And as I recall the eastern side of the city caught some hurricane-force winds, but as all of us know it was the water and the failure of the system that doomed New Orleans. I’ll never forget that as long as I live. My old stomping grounds, the good ol’ Mississippi Gulf Coast, got decimated….along the eyewall and in that infamous NW quadrant.

In some ways this could very well be worse due to the topography as well as its location in the NW quadrant…should the current projection hold. It’s worrisome, to say the least. And it’s easy for me to say that, I know, sitting tight in Mobile and watching it all unfold. Absolutely correct, this is nothing to play with.

Janie2006 wrote:The terrain in that part of Cuba certainly isn’t going to do much inhibiting. Does anyone know if there is a lot of marshland over that part of the island? AFAIK it’s just mostly flat and narrow.

It's not all flat, as there is a range of big hills/low mountains that the center will cross. Looks like the highest elevations are under 2,000 feet, though. I assume that's not enough elevation to have much impact.

I feel sick right now about this storm, pray the storm does not take any lives and everyone evacuates.

And almost certainly she’s already emerging into the southern Gulf. Not enough mountainous terrain and not enough time spent to make a true impact. And those hot bath waters lay just ahead.

Convection seems to have waned over land looking at IR but still continuing to build around the center nonetheless.

Looks like AF will arrive on scene right about when the majority of the eye is back offshore.

Really annoying that The (sometimes) Weather Channel keeps showing a peak wind gust map of LA-AR-MS with an erroneous two bands of "58-73 mph" winds for the hour I've been watching without correcting that.

Edit: Cool, they're now running an 'Ask us your question' segment. I'll ask them when are they going to fix it....
