This might be the one that escapes low? It seems so weird to imagine the W storm being a Cabo Verde long-tracker, forget some late season transitioning storm.

So...maybe we will be going Greek before the weekend?

50/70
An area of low pressure has formed from a low-latitude tropical
wave located a few hundred miles south-southeast of the Cabo Verde
Islands. Shower and thunderstorm activity has become more
concentrated during the past several hours, and a tropical
depression is likely to form during the next few days while the
system moves generally westward at 10 to 15 mph.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...50 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...high...70 percent.

Wow, below 10 north. If this escapes Teddy's outflow, might have some interesting potential.

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

I’m intrigued by this and Teddy, and to see how they interact. I think 98 may have a bit more potential than it’s getting credit for. I think there’s potential to make it to the Caribbean and possibly have a high ceiling intensity wise. I’m just going to keep watching and see what happens. There’s not much else to do, the models haven’t exactly been doing well this year.

If this remains south and ends up becoming a Big One, let’s hope 99L doesn’t develop and steal the name Wilfred.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Showers and thunderstorms associated with an area of low pressure,
located a few hundred miles south-southeast of the Cabo Verde
Islands, gradually continue to become better organized.
Environmental conditions are conducive for further development of
this system, and a tropical depression is likely to form during the
next few days while the system moves generally westward at 10 to 15
mph.

Re: ATL: INVEST 98L - Discussion
As with most waves this season, if it manages to cross the ATL without developing, then it has a chance to be trouble for land later. Eye balling the morning visible, the circulation is taking shape. Could be a TD by late tomorrow. GFS wants to develop a large TUTT (and shearing outflow from Teddy) to the N of 98L which opens it back up into a wave before reaching the islands.

Looking at ASCAT scans, looks like we have a new TD

Wilfred is probably just around the corner. September is just pumping out storms like there's no tomorrow.

I'm curious how advisories will be issued for this if it forms. Going by the regular pattern, the advisories for this storm would use the AT2 header - but that header is currently occupied by Paulette. AT3 is open (since Rene is gone) but that's not next in line.

It's be clear for months now that, based on almost every known indicator, anyone who thought that would crash and burn.

Circ is still elongated and still not that well-defined on the east side.
NHC will want to see it tighten up, especially on the east side, before initiating any advisories.

That ascat scan is old. The purple numbers represent the time that it scanned. That is from yesterday afternoon
