Coast guard has just been called in for a swimmer at Pensacola Pier who went into the water and never came out.

Re: ATL: ALBERTO - Sub Tropical Storm
I’m feeling a little more at ease due to Alberto’s lack of a “tropical” classification and that the forecast predicts no further intensification, but the central line of the NHC cone is within 4 miles of my house. Yikes! Leaves me a little concerned. I’m just across the Choctawhatchee Bay from Destin, FL.

There was one drowning death yesterday in PCB which I would guess they will consider Alberto related

Re: ATL: ALBERTO - Sub Tropical Storm
I say these things because I know we've always had a lot of lurkers here, and that's well and good, so long as they heed some of the very good advice that often posted. That being said, someone always has to learn the hard way. I just hope it isn't an absolutely pointless drowning because someone "didn't think it would be that bad". It is, from Gulfport, Mississippi all the way down the west coast of Florida.
Ok, off the soapbox now.

Janie2006 - I completely understand your frustration. We get the same "infallible idiots" on our CFL East Coast beaches during storms.
Post-Alberto here in Cape Canaveral: We were so fortunate. Nice rainfall and low winds. I watched my backyard tropical trees (banana, papaya, coconut palm, ...) throw a happy dance party, but best of all the damn peacocks stopped squawking for a whole four hours for the first time in six months (longest mating season EVER)! I still worry about an Osprey nest family in Foley, AL. The new chicks are are about 7-10 days out from flying. (YT: https://youtu.be/xJWQMoM8MSA) YT is only on during live coverage, but that's usually 12+ hours per day - weather permitting.
Lastly, for all my FloriBama friends, hunker down, stay safe, and can't wait to hear your storm stories. XOXO

Re: ATL: ALBERTO - Sub Tropical Storm
Despite the amount of dry air being entrained into the circulation, Alberto has been resilient to a certain degree and strengthening some (mainly because of the decreasing shear and increasingly warmer waters).

Re: ATL: ALBERTO - Sub Tropical Storm
I am very frustrated with the "policy" NHC is utilizing in designating a cyclone subtropical versus tropical.
As Alyono pointed out several posts previously Alberto this year looks as much or even more tropical than innumerable other cyclones declared tropical.
As we all know subtropical cyclones DO NOT count towards a season's ACE. If Alberto '18 remains classified subtropical during the post season evaluation, then I dispute ALL of the previous seasons, and ask that HURDAT re-evaluate the hard work they have already been performing. Alberto '18 has exhibited a warm core at least at flight level of the aircraft, and a close radius of maximum winds since its inception. The fact that a sharp upper level trough contributed to its inception is irrelevant. Otherwise all other similar cyclones should be reclassified subtropical. Agnes, in 1972 was an upper level trough formation as innumerable other storms as well. Just look at the examples of satellite imagery provided in which Alyono concluded and I completely agree are equal or less compelling evidence to our current storm. If that makes sense?
If there has been a policy change, I hope the NHC will explicitly explain it. But in my opinion, Alberto is just as tropical as its namesakes in '12 and '06, Cindy last year, and trust me I could easily compile a list of twenty or thirty other cyclones previously listed as tropical in which our current Alberto is equal or even more tropical looking. For lack of a better description. Okay. I am off my soap box. I just want consistency so that we can keep a consistent record of tropical meteorology. If in the past we were lacking in defining a tropical versus subtropical cyclone I can accept that. But I hope we go back and "redefine" those cyclones to be consistent with the policies going forward now.

Basically, it's a lack of respect for tropical systems and the things they very often do.
The sensible weather in the Mobtown area (aka Mobile) is fine and dandy. So far, I think the osprey family will be fine....as long as they don't decide to go swimming.

That was my understanding, but there appears to be a recent change to the definition. It now states ACE is calculated for all named storms which is defined as a tropical storm, subtropical storm, or hurricane. At least that is how NOAA/NHC/AOML is calculating ACE.
