Shell Mound wrote:Okay, maybe my perception is based on my reminiscence of the damage following both eyewall passages in Wilma, whereas Naples has yet to experience the rear or southern quadrant, which could explain the relatively minor damage compared to Wilma's aftermath, which featured not just a few shallow-rooted trees uprooted, but also larger trees and branches snapped, roofing tiles blown off at many sites, and similarly intense scenes on a widespread scale. I do not see that yet in the footage. I do see some trees uprooted, but not many, and surrounding royal palms and other trees show very little, if any, foliage damage. And I never said the storm surge isn't dangerous. I was only referring to the wind aspect.

I don't think you intended to downplay the storm, but I do suggest we wait to see actual damage reports and not amateur go pro footage from parking garages. :) I do not know where the most intense eyewall hit so I have no idea what the winds were, but I did see sustained values above TS force. It's too early to comment on that. Wxman was referring to data, not casual observations.

.. I see your edit ... thanks.

Cnn Bill Weir on FBI driving thru the keys, on FB live. Doesn't look too bad. Certainly not razed. But I don't know what Key he wasn't on.

Edit...it was islamorada...lots of debris but trailers still standing. The debris on the road appears to have been from surge

And I think British Virgin Islands were actually closer to absolute top level effects.

humming pretty good in palm beach gardens/juno. High TS sustained, with 70-80mph gusts. Impressive for how far we are away from the center

Yeah I'm not hearing much from Cuba but from the reports I did hear, some areas got destroyed.

I hear the folks saying this isn't over. But I think it's fair to say, judging from the minor damage in Naples via Jeff and others, the wind part of the storm was not even close to as severe as it could've been had Irma not scraped Cuba like it did. I'm not rooting for anyone to go outside, but compared to what it did in the Carribean, Florida did catch a big break. Surge? We'll see but even that doesn't seem to match with the severe predictions we saw. Rain seems to be a temporary problem as it gains forward speed and weakens. All that said, I do hope for minimal damage and hopefully no loss of life in Florida. I do think it's important for us to be less CONUS-centric and really think about/ send prayers out to the thousands of people in other places whose lives were upended by her pre-FL landfall.

I saw a photo of concrete hotel blasted to metal skeleton on twitter but I can't find it now. The damage level on parts of British Virgin Islands likely resembles an EF4 tornado.

I lived on Anguilla for 10 years until 2015. The pictures and phone conversations from our friends is surreal. The Anglec Electric Company estimates electric service won't return for 4 - 6 months. Nearly every utility pole on the island was yanked out, split in two, or leaning.

Yes, it could have been worse in Fl as far as sustained winds, but as some have stated, this is still an ongoing event. There will be oncoming surge now on the west coast of Fl as Irma creeps up the penninsula. Also, hate to say it, but there may be greater tornado potential with Irma overland tonight in Fl. As storm weakens to Cat 1 core, with frictional effects, and continued lower pressures than one would expect with a hurricane of this intensity, the tornado threat could increase. There is a real possibility of serious tornadoes too. Not just little quick spin-ups. Something to watch for tonight.

I really think the time for these kinds of posts is tomorrow, we are still in the middle of this and don't have all the information yet. The peak surge for Naples is a little over an hour from now as the wind shifts.
