Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
Just turned around on A1A.
DANGEROUS storm surge.
Miles of it. 3 feet deep and rising.
Back to the bridge then I-95 N.
There are limits and you must always know where they are.

Although I have been a hurricane forecaster since 1980 that only means I've been wrong lots of times.

Anyone have any cams of the Jacksonville area? I found one but it is now down.

Wow. The all-time record at Mayport is 8.5 feet from the 1898 hurricane. Other than that, it's apparently never gotten above 4.54' (http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrogra ... gage=mypf1).

If you go to the Local observations reports threads on the first page you will find the North Florida Beach web cam which is on Jacksonville Beach..

From his post previous to the last I would say Rail Dog is just north of the Palm Coast. He posted he was on the ICW on Hammock Dunes Bridge.
He actually said Hammond Dunes Bridge but I think this is close to where Rail Dog is.

What was the height of the surge there?
Surge at Mayport for Hurricane Dora was 4.4 feet according to a NWS Jax met I just spoke to a few moments ago. Matthew has now exceeded that mark and the height is still rising.
Was the surge 4.4 feet, or was the gauge reading 4.4 ft? Huge difference. From what I can tell, there was a crest of about 4.3' on 9/10/64, which would have been Dora, so it seems like the actual surge is a bit less.

That's the total height, right? Isn't storm surge usually measured as height above the normal high tide, so more like 3-4 feet here? Still impressive!

That is right . Matthew literally destroyed Dora's record. It is incredible and it is still rising.
Also, for those familiar with the Jacksonville Landing, the moving swayingng concrete dock in front of the Landing is taking some structural damage and water is bedinning to flood over portions of that dock on the St. Johns River.
Since we have record storm surge on the St. Johns now, there is going to be significant flooding in the tributaries in Jax ss well.

Yeah. I just had a similar question. Looks like the tidal height relative to MLLW at Mayport is ~5.25' about now. That's relative to a MLLW of -3'. So the surge is whatever is on top of 2.25ft.
At St. Augustine, high tide was 5'. It looks like MLLW is similar. So the surge is like 4 feet.

I just pushed the "Home" button on my trucks GPS.
That was an INCREDIBLE run.
No regrets except for those suffering because of Matthew.

Im confused.... All time record is 8.5. Guage shows the highest this has been is 5.2. Am I missing something? Because by the link provided Dora was over 3ft higher

It is a gauge reading for height. , which Dora's mark was broken. It is now at 4.7 feet and rising.
