That band about to rake the Southern N.O. metro looks nasty would not be surprised if there are 50-60 sustained winds in that band with 80ish gusts.

Amazing contrast on local TV coverage just now...one reporter at New Orleans lakefront, where it looked like the footage Weather Channel uses to open there Tropical Updates: winds howling, breaking off the tops of the huge waves as they break over the top of the seawall into howling spray, reporter pointing out water a few feet up a picnic shelter house....over in Mandeville on the north shore of the lake, a different reporter was standing in front of Lake Pontchartrain which was perfectly flat with barely a ripple. That will change later on tonight, I'm sure.

Can't hear the television in the next room from here, but I'm not exactly sure why they're keeping video footage of the 17th Street canal on for so long. I did catch that the floodgates at 17th Street Canal, Orleans Canal, London Avenue Canal, and IHNC (Industrial Canal) have all been closed. These are all new since Katrina. This is a good thing for me, as rising storm surge backing up these canals is what submerged me for Katrina, but the problem for me is that when they close these gates they rely on new pumps they've installed at the gates to lift the rainwater in the canals (that's where the rainwater that falls on New Orleans' streets is pumped to) over the gates and into the elevated Lake Pontchartrain. So I'm supposed to be less vulnerable to storm surge flooding, but more vulnerable to rainwater flooding.

It is putting all of your marbles in one bag, so to speak. It isn't the best design. The correct, better engineered desgn. was to relocate the pumping stations to the mouth of each outlet canal so you wouldn't need to have a dam at the end, like they have constructed and have made the older pump stations at the mercy of the newly installed pumps at the dams at the end of the canals.

Land station S of there on reporting NNW winds. That means the center is N of there...seems like landfall at the mouth of the MS

Just 5 mbar higher than Gordon...what?! Isaac is really a queer little (big) storm! Gordon was 30 mph higher than Isaac is now, but just 5 mbar lower in pressure?! Pinch me - I must be dreaming!

FYI, for anyone looking for an excellent alternative to TWC, extensive coverage on Hurricane Isaac's approach on the SE LA coast is being provided by DirecTV. Since yesterday , they have been running a public information channel on their channel line-up which I have watched exclusively. This channel is showing all of the major television stations in New Orleans covering live Isaac's approach to the Big Easy. If you have DirecTV satellite service, tune into it when you have a chance. It is an excellent outlet to stay on top of what is happening in and around New Orleans and the surrounding area. The channel line-ups are different in various markets.

Looking at latest wv loops of Isaac, he looks like he is starting to bump up against the ridge. Look how he is starting to flatten out along the northern fringes. Maybe the stall and turn west could happen soon. We shall see.

Thanks for the heads up. We've had the rain on such an intermittant basis so far that the streets are barely staying wet to this point, so we should be able to handle a decent amount at first. I've lived through a number of rainwater flood events here totally unrelated to tropical systems (just "training" thunderstorm systems dropping unGodly amounts of water in too short of a time) so I've seen what lots of rain falling really fast does around here.

Somewhat surprised I still have power at this point, actually.

The next couple of hours will be pretty rough in the region around Grand Isle. The intense band near the center should pass over that region.

Very doubtful, Isaac still appears to be deepening with no end in sight. The marshlands off SE LA won't do much to hurt it. You seemed to be something of a naysayer earlier in the game would you say Isaac has exceeded your expectations?

98L looks to be a potential player down the road and TD 11 looks nice. I am wondering if perhaps you're backing off on the claims you have made in the past the basin is overall unfavorable yet we appear to be almost on pace with 2005? I do realize those it's the quality of the storm not quantity but 11 is impressive....most people predicted 12 all season....

The end in sight is the land it's going to be coming upon soon.....No, actually, so far Isaac is fairly close to my low end prediction. No Cat 2, no Cat 3 etc....But a minimal hurricane capable of lots of flooding...
As far as my earlier predictions, nothing has changed in the Atlantic,Carib or Gulf, so no, haven't back off my earlier predictions regarding low end systems having a problem getting going......

Now back to Isaac....
