I'm so jacked in right now, and I can't fathom getting any sleep.
I live on the Cascadia subduction fault, which is getting bumped by constant earthquakes to the north of us. I am so worried I'll be woken up by the real deal tonight, and have my own catastrophe to deal with.

This storm should be the incentive for everyone to get their ducks in a row, be prepared, in the best way for the risks they face. Stock up. Be aware.

Yep, thats a fact. So many of us make the conscious decision to either live a particular lifestyle or live in a vulnerable area, but so many are willing to accept the "knowledge" of risk, yet not the responsibility of planning proactive or reactive plans to deal with the potential risk. Just because sh#% (crap) happens, certainly doesn't mean one need step in it .......and then walk in it again.

Here's a fantastic link to live scanners and info that can cull some of the fact from fiction in the emergencies being reported.

Have heard little out of South Jersey Shore...Several questions come to mind...Given the existence of the secondary extratropical vortex tracked by the HH after the 800pm "primary" landfall, where will the endgame landfall be set?....Was the system landfall actually south of Atlantic City?...Has anyone gotten a more comprehensive description of AC damage?.....Thanks for any and all input...Rich

The media's obsession with big cities could also find out that some of the worst devastation could be outside of NYC. We shall see.

Burnout, and waiting for daylight.
I'm out myself. Spent a lot of the day on the live Atlantic County, NJ EMS feed. I dread seeing the pics of what they, and everyone else, went through.

Sleep tight everyone, if you can...

I've been too busy monitoring my own issues on Sandy. Likely had a wind gust over 65 mph, perhaps 70 mph, at least on my balcony. And it is not over.

Highest gusts recorded here have been 74 km/h (46 mph)... still no rain though...we've now been rain-free for 10 days.

i'm very concerned about several areas in New Jersey and New York because of the rumors that are flying all over social media right now. I won't repeat them until I get confirmation.

Whew............ That was more like the "storm before the calm". One long full day of Sandy, and i'm felling like I need a cigarette (and I DON'T even smoke)! Yet the real measure of exhaustion won't even be felt until those in harms way venture out tomorrow a.m. and take their first look at some new waterfront property and start pulling seaweed out from their chimney's and grouper & sea bass out from the subways. :double:

For all those in the Northeast, stay warm-stay safe

Thankfully here in Richmond, we saw little more than moderate rain and 30kt winds. Our thoughts are with the citizens and fellow first responders up north. Stay safe.

Not much to say after this long and exhausting day except that my hat's off to the amazing job done by NHC and NOAA forecasting this storm and I'm extremely grateful to all the fine people here on Storm2K sharing their knowledge, info and insights.

Hundreds of people are being evacuated after a levee broke in the northern New Jersey town of Moonachie, the Associated Press reports. Bergen County Executive chief of staff Jeanne Baratta has told a local newspaper the entire town is under water and as many as 1,000 people could need to be evacuated

Good morning to all! Can we expect gradual improvement today for flood waters or will the tidal situation this morning cause more inundation?

Having been through several really bad storms myself, I can somewhat imagine the gut-wrenching feeling of seeing the devestation in the first light of day. Hy heart truly goes out to everyone that has been affected, and those that are still in the path of her destruction! And many blessings to all the emergency personel that risked their llives for the sake of others. And lastly, to those that will be in charge of putting this mess back together!

Statement from MTA Chairman Joseph J. Lhota on Service Recovery
The New York City subway system is 108 years old, but it has never faced a disaster as devastating as what we experienced last night. Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on our entire transportation system, in every borough and county of the region. It has brought down trees, ripped out power and inundated tunnels, rail yards and bus depots. As of last night, seven subway tunnels under the East River flooded. Metro-North Railroad lost power from 59th Street to Croton-Harmon on the Hudson Line and to New Haven on the New Haven Line. The Long Island Rail Road evacuated its West Side Yards and suffered flooding in one East River tunnel. The Hugh L. Carey Tunnel is flooded from end to end and the Queens Midtown Tunnel also took on water and was closed. Six bus garages were disabled by high water. We are assessing the extent of the damage and beginning the process of recovery. Our employees have shown remarkable dedication over the past few days, and I thank them on behalf of every New Yorker. In 108 years, our employees have never faced a challenge like the one that confronts us now. All of us at the MTA are committed to restoring the system as quickly as we can to help bring New York back to normal.

6:57AM EDT October 30. 2012 -

NEW YORK (AP) — A huge fire has destroyed at least 50 homes in a flooded neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens.

More than 190 firefighters were trying to contain the blaze in the Breezy Point section and two people have suffered minor injuries, a fire department spokesman said.

The fire was reported around 11 p.m. Monday in an area flooded by the superstorm that began sweeping through the city earlier, officials said.
