Re: ATL: IGOR - Hurricane - Discussion
Igor may be a Category one but he remains a huge hurricane with very low pressure for a Cat 1 hurricane so the waves and storm surge effects will likely be much greater than a typical 85 mph Category 1. Never underestimate the power of a large storm, a lot of people did that with Ike and they payed for it, some with their lives unfortunately.

for some reason I can't get the live streams. Do you have any idea as to what permission I need to give? It must be an ie setting as I even shut down my security software and it still did not show up.

I lost power earlier this morning luckily its back on now, but the question is for how long! It hasnt stopped raining since early this morning. I have a waterview where I live and the visability is near 0.
I'm glad that Igor is now a Cat 1 for Bermuda. I wish you and all of the islanders well.
Can you tell me if the Sonesta Beach Resort is still in Bermuda or was it closed due to Fabian? It was located on the southwestern part of the island. It was a beautiful resort. I stayed there in 1999 and after Fabian, I looked up it's website and it said that it was closed due to the damage sustained in that storm. I don't believe that it's there anymore and perhaps something else took it's place. It was right next to the Fairmont Southampton. I'm just curious.
Please continue to checkin with us here at storm2k to let us know how you are doing as power permits.
The eye looks like its on our extended radar now, also looks like its moving faster.
Sonesta beach..................oh well, our company demolished it a few years ago and got caught up in the leeman Brothers and stock market crash.................a big hole in the ground now!

That's so sad!

I'm glad that Igor seems to be moving faster now. Hopefully less time will mean less damage.

Re: ATL: IGOR - Hurricane - Discussion
Igor's appearance seems to be more of a hurricane transitioning to an extratropical storm. Recon couldn't find any eyewall last night. Without the eyewall and its bands of extremely strong winds, Igor's impact on Bermuda won't be nearly as bad as it could have as a Cat 3 with an eyewall intact. Structures in Bermuda are built quite strongly to withstand such storms. Hopefully, they'll survive Igor's Cat 1 winds fairly well.

Video clip (less than an hour old) from Bermuda...
And I thought it was only Floridians who drove around in the middle of hurricanes!

If Julia was a Cat 4 at 950 mb how can Igor be a Cat 1 at 949?
Huh?

Simple: Igor is a huge storm with an enormous radius of maximum winds. It is just spreading the energy over a huge area as opposed to concentrating it in the core.

I'm very happy for the folks in Bermuda - Jim Cantore included (lol), since it seems (as one of the pro mets posted earlier) Igor is already in the transition stage, and for certain is now mostly made up of non-convective strato-cu, so really some good news for everyone out there...
Even Jim was back to his old confident self this morning (lol) which was good to see, as it appears the worst of the weather will pass over them fairly quickly later today and this evening...

looks to me like igor took a short term NW motion and doesn't seem to be accelerating that much

looks like the center is near 30.6 65.6

Awesome video (and some audio) - just a guess, but if that camera is facing north, then it makes sense that the wind seems to be coming from the southeast, considering Igor's center (no eye but center) is to their south...

Why does it appear to be transitioning to extra tropical or subtropical, the waters are still very warm.

why do you think it is transitioning

looks pretty hurricane like to me
NHC 3 hrs ago says it should start the transition in about 24 hours....looks purely tropical IMO

Perhaps one of the pro mets can explain it better than I can (lol), but for certain the large amount of dry air being drawn into the system is accelerating the transition process, and in this photo almost all of the weather is to the north of the center, which is very extra-tropical looking, so the process is well underway, and is good for Bermuda, since the weather will improve rapidly once the center passes them - unlike a hurricane...

I don't really see the dry air being such a problem and it looks far to the west of the storm. The large size has allowed a large moisture envelop to build over Igor. I assume that slightly cooler water temps along with its massive size makes it appear that Igor is beginning to transition. Perhaps if Igor was half a small as it now, then it would have been a great deal stronger because the storm's energy would have been focused around the core instead of spreading hundreds of miles out.
