Yeah makes sense given the EWRC occuring and the weakening of the eyewall that is occuring at the moment.

Being so huge it is probably sucking up dry air every which way...although a lot of it is not getting into the circulation, some is...

I'd go with 110 kt for the current intensity. I would have been tempted to drop it to 105 kt based on earlier infrared satellites but the most recent visibles are a bit better.

It seems like he's almost as big as Hurricane Ike was back in 2008. Is he??

Igor is fairly large but it's not even close to the size of Ike, at least in terms of the extent of the windfield. Igor has hurricane-force winds extending up to 45 miles with tropical storm-force winds up to 225 miles. At landfall, Ike had hurricane-force winds extending up to 120 miles from the center with tropical storm-force winds 275 miles from the center. I can't remember if it was larger offshore or not but if it was then it wasn't by much.

Thanks for the reply.

The reason I ask is because I was looking at satellite images of Igor at NHC and he looked huge.

I remember Ike got a lot of media attention when he was in the Gulf of Mexico (not as much as it deserved considering Ike was the 3rd most destructive storm in US history). I was watching CNN back in 2008 a couple of days before Ike made landfall and I remember when they showed Ike in the GOM, I was just absolutely awed at how massive he was. I mean that thing looked scarier than anything I had seen before (including Katrina, Wilma, and Ivan).
Ike just basically covered the entire GOM from the Florida panhandle to northern Mexico. His bands were over Northern Louisiana like 2 days before he made landfall. I was shocked.

But its good to know that Igor isn't that monstrous. My laymen eyes thought he was nearing Ike size.

If you want a kick on big storms, google Typhoon Tip.

yeah i have seen Tip. Very impressive and cool looking cyclone.
a lot of those strong typhoons look very impressive, moreso than most atlantic hurricanes in my opinion.

but in the Atlantic, I have yet to see anything as impressive as Ike or Gilbert.

Isabel was a very big and beautiful cyclone, as were Mitch, Katrina, Hugo, and Wilma.
Rita looked alright, but a bit too small for a cyclone of that magnitude in my opinion. The same can be said for Andrew (too small).

A large Cat 2 is still VERY dangerous though...

Remember Ike? Even Katrina that was a category 1 for South Florida was a bad storm

I understand still a VERY serious threat, hopefully less devastating than a cat 4 would be.

It seems Igor is in the finishing stages of an EWRC. I expect intensification within the next couple hours.

Dr. Frankenstein letting Igor out of the lab, and now he's "Moving in Stereo." Sorry, HURAKAN's caption was too good to be left alone.

I don't know if this one is going to make another run at C5 or not, but it sure is a mean-looking hurricane.
