Custom / Personal Avatars

How do I put a custom or personal avatar in my profile.? I see all these cool avatars that people use but cannot find them in the avatar gallery. Thanks in advance...

Also, how do you get a picture (like a football helmet) in the signature of your messages?

An off-site avatar has to be located on an internet accessible server. If you find an avatar that you would like to use you can also send it to me via e-mail and I'll upload it for you.
