Much different than what some of these other posters are saying about complete overtopping and cracks in the levees? Local TV's have reporters live at the site and show nothing catastrophic going on. Go figure.
You can say what you want but I am watching them report live from the Port of New Orleans. Theres 6 to 8 feet of water there right now.
CNBC Asia using video from their NOLA affiliate WDSU, saying 8 ft.

6-8' at the Port of New Orleans? Where exactly? The port is along the Miss river.

The guy on CNN is doing a good job of explaining. He's not getting all dramatic about it... doesn't seem to be overhyping it.

I know it has been mentioned on another thread, but I'm watching the levees live on DirecTv channel 361.

How are the tornado warnings coming along? With all the talk about the levees on here and the tv channels, I haven't heard anything about it.

MSNBC reporter onsite at the overtopping location says it looks like a waterfall - the water is just rushing over the top. He estimates it's about the length of seven rail cars.
Go to wwltv.com and look at it for yourself. And decide if it looks like a waterfall. Not to me, but I'm not in the business of sensational reporting.
It looks like mostly spray to me, with an occasional spash of water. We're talking gallons per hour. Oh the horror.
I'm watching it livehttp://www.wdsu.com/video/17347538/index.html and I'm listening to the guy say there is a section where it's rushing like a waterfall, not just splashing over. And it sure looks like more than "gallons per hour". I don't see sensationalism from the reporters on this live feed. They're hoping the levee will hold but are worried about the rising water. Seems reasonable to me.
All I was going by was the video at the tv website. I'm sure current conditions are different.

I knew I forgot to do something.. like take them down... here's a pix of the surge at about 10:05 am .. sea wall is ~10.5 feet above sea level in front of my house.. pixs do not do this justice..
Dang Frank! How much higher do you think it will get?
Don't sweat the fan blades...
Looks to be holding at about 10-11 feet... certainly not going down any.. my parking pad under the raised house is 18 feet, house is 28 feet. Best guess it might creep up another couple of feet or so, worse case, only my opinion.. but let me tell you this ... I'M VERY IMPRESSED, especially since were so far away from the eye... Other than Gus taking out my ceiling fans, no other damage to report from my neighborhood.

Looking at the live stream of the Industrial Canal, there's also a lot of spray from the wind. The camera is shaking as well.

Yep. Anyone know of a link where I can find max wind gusts that occured with hurricane Lili? Just want to compare.
Edit, found the NHC storm report. Max sustained winds were only about 54mph with an official gust of 63 knots ~ 73mph. Don't know why the local media keeps comparing this to Lili, winds are forecast to be much higher.

Re: Cat 2 Hurricane Gustav makes landfall-Cocodrie, LA
I've watching live TV coverage right at the Industrial Canal, and the water is literally just inches from completely overtopping the levee across wide areas.
It's probably just a matter of time until it really does become a waterfall across wide areas of that canal.

Canal level up almost 1 foot from 10.5 ft to 11.24ft for the one hour ending about 15-30 mins ago. They are hoping the pumps can hold off the level from lower 9th. I hope so.
Where's the information for the Port? I have yet to hear anyone even mention it.

It looks like there's still rebar on top of that levee. Does anyone know if they were still in the process of adding another piece on top of the existing levee? It looks like that's something they could use.

Just saw a report from there. The port area definitely has 7 or 8 feet of water in it at that location. They did say they are not sure it is all from the overtopping though.
WOW!! Just showed some more live and it is not good. Looks like a lot of water is coming in at some of the flood gate locations.

Now who said Gustav was no big deal? Gulfport, MS reported a gust of 74 (hurricane force)
in a squall!!! Now that is serious. Thank goodness this was not the same storm (intensity) that
went over Cuba.
