Had Dolly stayed over water another 4 or 5 hours she would have become a major. As it is, it's going to be a pretty bad hit. Prayers to all in this storm's path.

I don't know why but my suspect is the diurnal max, it's the time of the day when storms fire everywhere.
Maybe an ProMet has an better answer.

The worst part will be the slow movement will not only flood some areas but those areas will get pounded with hurricane force winds/gusts for hours upon hours. Ophelia comes to mind. She was only a minimal Cat 1 but moved up the NC coast very slowly and caused Cat2 to Cat3 equilavelent damage just because of the pounding winds for hour upon hours.

How it got more symmetrical after landfall I have no clue. Something to ponder

Look at the eye on radar, it is amazing, very symmetrical now.

That's very wrong. We've had chest to head high sets coming in all day up here in the panhandle due to Dolly. Usually if there is a storm or hurricane in the Gulf, despite how strong it is, it affects the entire coastline.

I like to joke that enough monarch butterflies flapping their wings over the Bay of Campeche on their way to winter in the Yucatan can kick up the surf on the Northern Gulf Coast.

Ever since it was looking like Dolly would track through the southern Gulf, the local Panhandle surfing community has been all psyched up about the possibility of getting some high for the Gulf waves from the faraway storm.

Does someone know why this hurricane has kept its structure so well over land. The last radar image I saw was when it made landfall, and I think it looks better now than it did before.

Tropical storm Erin last year appeared to intensify over land.

I have read almost every post since this thread started and can't believe that there have been no remarks about Jim Cantore actually being at "ground zero". Doesn't happen very often as we know and most consider his arrival good news for the destination. (wink).

On a serious note, kudos to the Pro Mets, NHC and all for their excellent work throughout the duration from invest to Cat. 2 and afterwards. A special thanks to the Mods and Admins for their excellent job of keeping the board civil and everything running smoothly.

My thoughts and prayers continue to be with the people of South Texas. It certainly brings back memories of Wilma and Charley!
