Planes are flying in to evacuate folks. Air courier service here is bringing in special charter flights to Miami and folks can take their animals.

AA is offerring a one way flight off island to US citizens who hold a valid passport.......neighbors secured a flight to Philadelphia which is all the airline could offer them.

I am afraid to ask what the price of that ticket was...

Gretchen will you be staying? How are you recovering from Hanna?

...COMBINED WITH RATHER WARM
WATER WATERS EAST OF THE BAHAMAS...SHOULD RESULT IN
RESTRENGTHENING. THE HURRICANE'S EXACT TRACK IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE
IT COULD BE IMPACTED BY COOLER WATERS UPWELLED BY HANNA
.

Are you staying or leaving?

Our villa is being boarded up as we speak....we had a structural engineer come look at the house today who told us if a CAT4 hits here, our villa roof will not make it through the storm.

We are staying....we will be in the housing provided for the employees of a five-star resort here. It is concrete, inland and with a secure roof.

My brother who endured Hugo in STT called and suggested we get a sea container for all our stuff here in the villa and in storage located on Island. I have been given one free of charge to use.

On a lighter note, we have had many friends already leave or leaving tomorrow. They are dropping off all their food here so if anything else we will eat well (Port closed to all ships as of yesterday)

I have followed this forum closely now since moving to the Turks and pray for your safety for those in the path of Hanna or Ike.

Gretchen,
Hi. I know you are a first responder. Are you guys staying?
We left SXM and moved to Miami. Unfortunately we are in a mandatory evacuation zone.
Watching carefully and have hotel reservation 1 mile inland.
Good luck girl,
irina

Yes Irina, I am a First Responder here.

My first and foremost priority is to insure the safety of my husband, myself and my beloved dog who is part of our family.

Once that is done, I will kick into the First Responder mode once the dust settles.

We are leaving the Island and also moving to Florida. We depart next Sunday the 14th to secure housing.

Moving to the Weston area.

Gretchen

From Wikipedia:

[edit] Stadium effect

A picture of Hurricane Wilma's eye taken at 08:22 CDT (13:22 UTC) October 19, 2005, by the crew aboard the International Space Station. At the time, Wilma was the strongest Atlantic hurricane in history, with a minimum central pressure of only 882 mbar (26.06 inHg).[18] Not only is this a classic example of a pinhole eye, but also of the stadium effect, where the eyewall slopes out and up.The stadium effect is a phenomenon observed in strong tropical cyclones. It is a fairly common event, where the clouds of the eyewall curve outward from the surface with height. This gives the eye an appearance resembling an open dome from the air, akin to a sports stadium. An eye is always larger at the top of the storm, and smallest at the bottom of the storm because the rising air in the eyewall follows isolines of equal angular momentum, which also slope outward with height.[19][20][21] This phenomenon refers to the characteristics of tropical cyclones with very small eyes, where the sloping phenomenon is much more pronounced.

I had opined yesterday that I thought this would be a huge 'cane sitting off Florida in a few days with a chance for a crossover into the GOM and a double hit on the U.S.

After being away from the PC today, I see that unfortunately, that idea may have some merit. :(

Looks almost like the son of Andrew with track and intensity forecast thus far...

Hopefully all you guys on the islands will be ok...

By the way if the upwelled water does limit Ike somewhat its BAD for Florida because it means that once it hits the warm waters it'll strengthen and have very little time to undertake an EWRC and may be able to slam close to peak strength.

I'd say 120-125 right now too, but I do think it's weakened and it was probably around 135 kts IMO last night.
