Planes are flying in to evacuate folks. Air courier service here is bringing in special charter flights to Miami and folks can take their animals.

AA is offerring a one way flight off island to US citizens who hold a valid passport.......neighbors secured a flight to Philadelphia which is all the airline could offer them.

I am afraid to ask what the price of that ticket was...

Is Ike annular? Has he been undergoing any ERCs? Sorry if this has been discussed. I haven't been paying as much attention as I'd like.

Annular hurricanes have almost no banding. Ike is not annular.

You will be comforted to know that one of the local mets said that Ike will be tracking over water that has been "significantly" cooled by Hanna.

Not slamming a met - I just don't personally see that.

Yep that stadium effect is textbook cat-4/5 stuff, NW quadrant still looks a little on the bare side for my liking, still think there is shear there but clearly the inner core isn't getting harmed by it all that much at the moment.

They are indeed cooler though I doubt it'd make a huge deal of difference unless Ike slows way down, the other thing to note is that once west of 75W heat content increases quite a lot again as the waters there haven't been touched this season.

Yea, I heard that too, that Ivan may weaken quite a bit once it goes over the waters that Hanna is upwelling. I posted that a long time , but was basically ignored.....upwelling can really have a negative effect(or positve in this case) on the development of a cane or weakening of one....Hanna may be a Godsend in disguise afterall...

Check this out!

http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/gall ... 40.1km.jpg

Not only is the "stadium effect" astonishing, but if one looks closely, the meso-vortices can be seen inside the eye. As in Isabel's (I know, Isabel WAS annular, and this one is not) scary looking "pentagram" :grrr: eye feature, which was formed by a grouping of those vortices crowded within her eye, when she was a peak intensity.

A sign of a very intense hurricane. Amazing, just amazing.

Anyone know more about these vortices?

BTW, my computer wallpaper image has been unchanged since 1812 UTC September 13th...a great view of Isabel from space. Call me twisted, he he, but I look at that crazy storm every day, and then some.

You meant Ike I'm sure. lol

Anyway, I didn't think that Hanna was deep enough to cause that much upwelling?

:roflmao:

Not him again!!!!

I don't see upwelling being a huge issue, it might prevent RI but I doubt it would cause much weakening. Fully expect at least a Cat 3 in the Bahamas.

I also have doubts this will weaken to a 3 later tonight and a 2 tomorrow, that likely changes the future intensity also.

Look at the heat content over the Bahamas....then look at the heat content around 50-55W where Ike bombed...and notice they are about the same...the heat content 50-55W allowed for Ike to become a 145mph hurricane...

Nothing more has to be said about the upwelling issue then that, if the set-up is favorable, the waters to the north of Haiti support cat-4.
