alaska_avo The eruption of Redoubt volcano continues, with growth of a lava dome in the summit crater. Small earthquakes and tremor continue at this time. A small plume of steam and ash is observed in satellite and radar data, extending for about 10 miles to the east of the volcano at an approximate height of 15,000 ft. Web cameras are currently obscured by clouds. The aviation color code is ORANGE and the alert level is WATCH. AVO continues to be staffed 24 hours per day. about 23 minutes ago from Twittermail

Steam Plume from Mount Redoubt

Alaska’s Mount Redoubt remained active on April 7, 2009, releasing a plume that blew across the Cook Inlet toward the southeast. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite took this picture the same day. The volcanic plume’s light color in this image suggests that the volcanic emissions consist primarily of water vapor. Earlier emissions had coated the local snow cover with muddy-brown volcanic ash, and some traces of that ash linger northeast of the volcano. The current plume casts a shadow toward the northeast, over the land and the water.

According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, Redoubt’s activity continued on April 7, 2009, with varied levels of ashfall and lava flows from the summit crater. In addition, a new lava dome appeared to be forming at the summit crater. The observatory reported a steam and ash plume rising to an altitude of 4,570 to 6,100 meters (15,000 to 20,000 feet) above sea level.

alaska_avo Redoubt\'s 2009 eruption continues and appears to be gaining intensity. Seismic activity has increased markedly in the last 24 hours, showing stronger volcanic tremor and more frequent rockfall events. Minor emissions of ash have also been visible in webcam views during this time period. Steam emissions in particular have become more vigorous over the last 30 minutes, with a steam plume now reaching approximately 18,000 feet above sea level.Explosive events are possible with little or no warning. The volcano remains at ORANGE/WATCH and AVO is staffed 24/7. about 3 minutes ago from Twittermail

That is steam coming out of Redoubt. There has not been any ash detected by radar signal recently. Weather has been poor the last 2 weeks, which has restricted closer inspection. The lava dome growth has slowed.

AVO has a continuous reminder that an explosive eruption could happen at anytime.

Redoubt is in a color code of green and has returned to a non-eruptive state. And as we all know this could change in a matter of hours or 20 years from now. I grew up in Alaska and spent a good portion of my adult life in the bush. The best view of Redoubt is from the Kenai Peninsula on the road to Homer. It's a majestic mountain.

That's the view looking across Cook Inlet......you got it!!! I've spent many a day fishing salmon looking at that mountain. The view is best when it's down around -20F in the winter. Your making me homesick!!!!
