Until April 18, 1906, the Charleston earthquake was the deadliest in US History. Based upon intensities, damage and construction practices, modern estimates placed the shock in the 6.5-7.0 range or about the same as the Loma Prieta 1989 shock and the Northridge shock of 1994 in CA.
