Some data on super volcano's and why you should be scared!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Garita_Caldera

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_Explosivity_Index

A single eruption with > 10,000 km³ of ejecta volume is known: the Fish Canyon eruption (c. 27 Ma ago) of La Garita with a VEI of 9.2.[1]

Also Yellowstone only 2,500Km^3
And Toba 2,600Km^3 that almost wiped out the human race.

MY GOD A VEI 9+ that is like getting a cat6 Tornado or hurricane. It would wipe the human race off this planet in we would have a thousand year "nuclear" winter like thing.

This La Garita thing would kill us all. In it with Yellowstone and many other area's of interest are within the United states.

The article says that it is extinct unlike Yellowstone which is dormant.

Ok, then could Yellowstone come close to a VEI 9 if it where to go at once?

Interesting stuff. Not much point in "being scared", though. When it happens, it happens.

The largest eruption estimated was 250 million years ago (not a coincidence IMO), when Siberia blew up. There's not much info on it, and it was 250 million years ago, so it's likely to be off by a bit. But it is a very popular PT extinction theory.
