Alaska Supervolcano Erupting?

_____________________________

23 Jul 08 – “Note that not only is the caldera double the size of the one erupting in Chili,” says reader Charles P., “but that a sister volcano, outside the caldera, began erupting as well.”

The Alaska Volcano Observatory says that Okmok Volcano's six-mile-wide caldera has several vents erupting simultaneously.

Billowing ash clouds are reaching heights of up to 20,000 feet as seismic activity continues to fluctuate.

Geologists say they have been very busy trying to monitor not only the Okmok eruption, but also the erupting Cleveland Volcano nearby.

'I can't remember the last time we managed two eruptions at once, especially two so closely spaced on the volcanic arc,' said Tina Neal with the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

Is this really a super volcano? Robert Felix says it is on not by fire but by ice. If it is the news media needs to warn people now.

We need food ready to feed all 300 million Americans for how ever long the effects of this will last. We need to be ready if this is in fact a "super volcano". Seeing what Toba 75,000 years ago did to us this is to be taken very seriously if it is. We must build green houses to grow food and start felling up the grain store big time.

Ash plumes to only 20000 feet aren't very indicative of an intensely energetic eruption and certainly not a VEI=8.

:uarrow: I think the concern is that the volcanic activity currently going on could be a sign of an approaching eruption, though it's more likely than not just letting off a bit of ash (as volcanoes sometimes do).

It could be throat clearing before an eruption but remember that a VEI=8 (super eruption) is three orders of magnitude larger in energy release (at least) than Mt. St. Helens in 1980-itself a 10 MT blast.

Is this anywhere near the Aleutian islands? There have been daily earthquakes ranging from 1.5 to 3.6 in the Aleutian Islands area for the last two months.
