Here's a more zoomed-in coastal analysis with satellite and the center of Gabrielle indicated just north of the convection. Winds are west of north at Morehead City now, indicating the center is north of that latitude. Nothing around the center in the way of low clouds now.

Kinda squally in Elizabeth City, NC. Here's a live cam on the Pasquotank River waterfront.

Nothing new here but Accuweather is still predicting Gabrielle will attain cat 1 hurricane status.

We are getting some rain (about 1/2 inch so far this morning with more coming across Bogue Sound now), but very strange winds. 3 minutes ago we had no wind (trees were still and my neighbors flag was not moving at all). Now wind has picked up (probably as this next heavier rain is moving in), but not from any one direction. Seems to be coming from the South for a minute, then West, then North, (anywhere in those 180 degrees). Feels more like a warm summer rainy day then a storm. BTW, I am in Newport, NC just about 5 miles East of Morehead City. I hope some of the rain does move inland. I think our grass is still mostly dead (like everyone else), but we get our drinking water from wells, so I would rather have the reservoirs full for you then green grass down here.

It's just pathetic that most of North Carolina and Virginia won't get some rain out of this. They need it so badly.

What a thoroughly frustrating, disappointing little system.

Gabrielle would have fulfilled your desires if shear had been low, and the dry air would have been gone. Overall I think Gabrielle has made an incredible comeback from just a swirl to a moderately strong tropical storm.

In Corolla, NC (soundside) very humid & breezy now, had one pretty hard rain shower and wind picked up a little, lasted about 3 minutes total. Mix of sun and clouds, squally looking/unsettled...but otherwise not much to speak of. First day of our OBX vacation...think we'll take the dogs and umbrella and head to the ocean for a look. You can hear the ocean much more loudly today than last night for whatever that's worth. :D

Amazing pictures of the devastation at Cape Hatteras on TWC. Sunny sky, people laying on the beach. TWC girl looks quite out of place in a rain jacket. Maybe they should issue TWC bikinis? No, cancel that, I don't want to see TOO much of Jim Cantore. They'll get a few squalls this afternoon, though. But this one of those storms where you just walk inside when you see it coming and wait a few hours for it to pass.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this reach hurricane strength at some point. Maybe just before it's transitioning point to extratropical.

Same here, just past the Outer Banks after it turns is the most likely. It has motivation in keeping the September hurricane streak alive...my landfall intensity guess is 65 mph.

That reminds me of hurricane Earl. Everybody stayed home for the big storm and save for a few clouds an a BRIEF shower in the AM...we had a sunny afternoon with a nice sea breeze. Its all about LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. i will never forget Hurricane Danny. It was a pretty sheared system as well altohugh MUCH more organized than this(even attained cat 2 I think. But whilst Mobile and AL/MS state line was recieving 18+ inches of rain...Biloxi sat by with a a few showers.

From the expanse of the convection- it extends around
100 miles east-west, it looks like much of eastern north
carolina will get a soaking that they need. I'm hoping
for some heavy heavy rains for you all to bust
your drought!!! :D
