Because of the bombing, and the fact that such deep convection is over the eyewall, I am convinced that strong winds WILL be brought down to the surface. The reduction factor b/t 700mb and the sfc is more like around 95%... this storm will be very efficient at bringing gusts down to the sfc. I expect gusts to be over 170 kt on the coast.

This is history. This is bad. This is a very big story. Yet FoxNews, MSNBC, et. al. think it's not even worth a mention.

I guarantee if it was just a category one hitting the gulf coast we'd hear about it non stop on all the news channels. Yet, it seems like when it wasn't going to hit America most people stopped caring.

CNN is covering it.

I'm assuming it's because a) it's super late at night and b) it's a sparsely populated area of Mexico, and c) there might be a much bigger story in a day or two on the other side of the Yucatan. Just my $0.02. That said... I agree with your sentiments.

Agreed wxmann. Perhaps even higher.. Chetumal can easily see gusts exceeding 150 kt

Chetumal wont recieve Category 4 conditions in the southern eyewall unless Dean's southern eyewall has strengthened since last recon obs...Recon obs suggested that Dean carried solid 125 mph winds in his southern eyewall. Land friction should reduce these winds to at least 110 mph or so. This is, of course, going on data an hour ago. It is quite possible Dean's southern eyewall has intensified much like its northern eyewall.

Forward speed relationships now suggest that Dean's southern eyewall contains 130 mph winds (20 mph forward speed, 170 N Quad 130 S Quad).

S eyewall is registering 121KT at flight level.... Entering the eye again.

Y'know, it seems to be taking quite the little NW jog. Just saying. Nothing more.

At such extreme winds it's difficult for them to get the highest of them on each pass. Probably why "just" 161kts that pass.

Ah ok, I live in the Netherlands, so I think I get CNN international here. CNN here is showing a sat loop in a corner of the screen and reporting about Dean 75 procent of the time.

I bet you Dean has mesovortices similar to Andrew.....

Weve gotten varying wind reading in three different passes in the N quad of 175 mph, 150 mph, and anywhere in between.
