I've never seen grey in a hurricane eyewall before.

That may change tonight.

Slightly off-topic, but if you want to see an insane IR image, you need to check out Wilma as it was rapidly intensifying. Now THIS is what a record-breaking hurricane looks like on IR (note the extreme coverage of temps colder than -80C!):

Another image is at http://www.tornadocentral.com/now/wilmaIRb.jpg (a little earlier than the above).

^^^^ THE ABOVE IS A 2005 IMAGE OF WILMA -- THIS IS NOT A CURRENT IMAGE OF DEAN!

Look at Dean's eye! Drastically different from the days of EWRC discussion!

Re: DEAN -Threat Area -Yucatan Peninsula-Mainland Mexico

As Dean passes by the Bay Islands, Roatan, sitting at 16.38, about 150 miles south of the eye,
is being pelted by wind gusts of 30+ knots and we expect more throughout the night.
Relieved we are not in the path again, but nonetheless,
cautious of what Mother Nature can bring on, at any moment. Most workers returned home about 4:00pm
today and Roatan has pretty much shut down for the night. Most are socked in and not moving anywhere.
We continue to pray for those in Belize and the Yucatan where Dean is heading at the moment. All is well
on Roatan and God bless those in Dean's path...

http://stormcarib.com/

A message from Roatan.I join in the prayers to all who will be in the path of Dean in the Yucatan Peninsula and Mainland Mexico.

Un mensaje desde Roatan,Honduras que se solidariza con los que van a estar en la trajectoria de Dean.

IMO, as insane as Wilma was. It will not be in the same class as seeing a possible deepening cat 5 make LF.

Winds hole major hurricane winds where with in 5-8 miles of that 2 mile wide eye to. This has it likely out to 12-15+ on all sides.

Imagine for a moment. A 30-40 mile lawn mower moving inland.

EDIT: A long lasting one at that

Not to downplay Dean *at all*... but since Wilma has been brought up, I thought I'd share a link of the intensification of Wilma to 882mb on the AVN satellite.

ftp://gp16.ssd.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/trop ... 90-292.avi

Ah, yes... back when I was a slacker college student instead of a full-time working sap. I was up that whole night of the 19th back then... I won't last nearly that long tonight.

Yeah, Wilma was 5 mile wide EF 4 tornado. This is a 30-50 mile wide area to the north of this thing that likely has cat3+ winds. This is a hurricane. This reminds me of Rita,Katrina in the cloud top temperature. Maybe this could peak out near 175 mph?
