Cat 5's are rare to begin with, 1999-2002 had NONE. We've had 6 since then, including an all-time record of 4 in 2005.
And not only have we had a record number of Cat 5s in such a short time, but the Cat 5s keep breaking records....storm surges, pressures, etc. It seems that every time we get an August or September storm now we can expect it to break a record.
This may sound cold hearted but this is a amazing part of history we are witnessing and a "good" time to be a hurricane watcher. May not be for people that have built on the coast.
But hey I got a falt under me or near me that can produce a 9+ earth quake. But if I'm going to die I'm going to die. That is life.
IT could happen at any time to.

Yeah, awesome...![]()
The damage difference is minimal between a high Cat 4 and a low Cat 5. That is just a psychological barrier.
yes the barrier between a rational person and a raving lunatic. I am sure he would not be happy if it were he and his family in Chetumal and Belize.

Re: DEAN -Threat Area -Yucatan Peninsula-Mainland Mexico
I'm starting to become more worried about the second landfall... it's moving toward a very densely populated area with a horrible history of hurricane prevention. And I haven't read about any action taken by the Veracruz state gov't.

I have a bad feeling, there might be another Category 5 hurricane before the season ends. I hope I am proven wrong.

"I was glad to get back to my hotel and find the lobby buzzing with activity-- including what seem to be lots of TV people. I'm not riding this out alone, praise the lord"
Well, I hope it doesn't end up in a drama, like a story about a family having a hurricane party at the beach I have once read.

If it stays at Cat 5 until landfall, it will be the first landfalling Cat 5 in the Western Hemisphere since Andrew.
I think that is incorrect. Mitch in 98(?) was a Category 5 and so was Wilma in Cancun.

Mitch was only Cat. 1 at landfall and Wilma was Cat. 4.

Gilbert was a cat 5 in 1988, and Wilma was a cat 4 at landfall. Mitch hit hondoras in 98.

Nope Mitch was in 98, I don't remember if it made landfall as a 5. I think it weakened before landfall. In Wilma was a cat5 at landfall.
Mitch - cat 1, 1998
Wilma - Cat 4, 2005

Mitch stalled just offshore for a long time and weakened from a 5 down to 1 by landfall.

Wilma made landfall as a Cat. 4. Mitch made landfall as a 1.

I am hearing various radio stations but as you said almost nothing is mentioned about the second landfall. All the information is about the first landfall.
Estoy escuchando varias estaciones de radio pero apenas se habla del segundo azote en Veracruz.
Derek,as you said, the second landfall will be worse in terms of the flooding and the winds too.But all the attention is to the first landfall.
Derek, como tu dices,el segundo azote sera bien malo con increibles inundaciones.
