Hmmmmm, what does everyone think about this? China is asserting her growing influence in Africa that much is certain:

It's a matter of time. Now 170 countries have diplomatic relations with China and only 23 with Taiwan.

It's hard to imagine that you don't even have diplomatic relations with a nation that has the largest population of the world, with a nation that is among the most powerful countries of the world and with a country that is a permanent member of the UN Security Council. And on the contrary, why do they have to maintain a so-called diplomatic relations with an authority that is not widely recognized by the international society, that has attempted more than 15 times but still fails to enter UN as well as other international organization such as WHO?

The only reason Taiwan will has not been able to enter to UN is CHINA. China has exerted pressure on nations NOT to recognize Taiwan in an attempt at isolate the nation. They hope that the isolation will force some grand reconcilation with the motherland (China). If the Taiwanese people do not want to join the "motherland", then China should stop forcing them to.

History has proved for us that Taiwan is a part of China, just like Hawaii is a part of the US. No one will agree with Hawaii's entry to the UN, Puerto Rico is not a member of UN, either.

And, I bet the next countries who will sever its tie with Taiwan will be Panama and Paraguay.

Panama is unlikely to sever ties with Taiwan if Chen Shui-bian is still in power. After May's presidential elections, if the Guomindang wins the presidency, then I think it might be very likely.

The United States is also opposed to Taiwan joining the UN.
