Immient Death of My Mother

#1 Postby DaylilyDawn » Thu Aug 07, 2003 11:15 am

If I am not in here in the next few weeks, it will be because of my mother having passed away. She took a turn for the worse this last week and then spilled hot coffee on herself on Mon and received 2nd degree burns on her left hip and leg. I went to see her yesterday and it doesn't look good for her as far as time is concerned. She can no longer feed herself and is hardly eating anything. She is on a restricted fluid diet because of the heart disease and she gets very deheydrated and always asks for water. I had to give her a small amount of ice water while I was there becuse she was so thirsty, she had a crust building up around her mouth where she kept moistening her lips by licking them. I just hope that when death comes to her, all of my sisters and my brother can be with her. Threee of us live close to where we grew up, oldest sister still lives in Bartow, I live in Lakeland, 15 miles away, and younger sister lives in the Tampa area. My brother is out in Calif. and my youngest sister is up in northeast Georgia.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mother Daylily! It must be really hard to see someone you love suffer like that. I hope that your brother and sister can be there as well and may she go peacefully.

Please keep us up to date!

signs of death

#4 Postby DaylilyDawn » Thu Aug 07, 2003 8:38 pm

Tom , the hospice worker says she may rally but she can't give us a time frame yet. I have been dealing with it as best I can but I still have periods when all I want to do is cry. My father's death did not affect me like this will since we weren't as close . He passed away in July 1996 from complications of aspiration pnumonia and Alzheimers. It was not totally unexpected but sooner than we had hoped. My mom dealt with it pretty well and did not let her self go until the last year or so. She put off going to the doctor to check out why her feet and ankles were swelling so. That was the heart disease making itself known and she ignored the signs. By the time she finally went to doctor the disease was too far advanced to even consider a transplant for either organ.

Update on My Mom

#9 Postby DaylilyDawn » Sat Aug 09, 2003 6:05 pm

My husband and I went to see my mother this after noon. Boy, what a difference 3 days made in how she looked. On Wed, it looked like she wouldn't last more than 24 hours more. Today she was alert and feeling so much better that she was able to get up , get dressed(with some help from staff) and in her wheelchair. So we got both my mom and my grandmother and took both of them outside on the front porch of the nursing home and sat out there in the frsh air for over an hour talking with them. I am sure that all your prayers have made the difference and for that I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Daylily, don't you wonder where your mom gets her inner strength to rally like that? It is just amazing how she can be so ill and then get well enough to do things you would not have thought she'd be able to do. The same happened with my mom...the hospital would call saying we needed to get there right away and a few days later she was back in the nursing home. Hoping for the best for you, your mom and the rest of your family.
