I just found a huge snake

I came home just a little while ago to find my dog going crazy over something in the grass. I looked at it and it appeared the dog had killed a bird (I could only see a brown thing laying there). I went inside to get the key to get into the fence. When I came back out I could see it was a snake. I like snakes so I usually just toss them out of the yard, so I went over to check him out. As I got close he rose up and tried to strike the dog. I could see it was a pit viper, about 4 feet long, so I went inside for my trusty viper buster.
I came back out and as I went toward him he actually tried to strike me. Moments later he was introduced to the business end of a shotgun.
So anyway, this brings me to my point. Has anyone here ever been bitten/attacked by a snake, or had a pet bitten/killed by a snake?

I nearly stepped on a few, including a Coachwhip the other day. Considering their nature, I'm suprised he didn't bite me.
How fat was the snake?

I was trapped by a water moccasin when I was a kid. We always went camping 13 miles down a gravle road on a creek, had a blast. We were on one side of the road, my cousins on the other and the campfire was in the middle. Anyway, when someone would see snake swimming towards us they would yell "snake" and everyone cleared out of the creek. This particular time as everyone ran to the creek bank, I ran to the sand bar, it was closer. That dange thing followed me up and trapped me. I knew enough to freeze. Thank goodness daddy was a crack shot. I have been terrified of snakes ever since.

Our animal control here won't deal with poisonous snakes.

When I was younger I was in the snake trade...I've been bitten thousand times plus....But never by a poisonous one..I always terated them different...I have been withe people that have been bit as well as a dog...They all survived..Most snakes are just on there way somewhere else...And there ae probably other things in your yard that are just as deadly...

When we found snakes in our yard we shot first and then checked to see what it is. We have killed several snakes that were poisonous when we lived over near Bartow. One was a pygmy rattler that was near my husband's leg when he was working on the car. One was a rattler that had curled up by the leg of the swing set that my then 3 year old youngest son was on the seesaw. The leg was on the side that my son was on. My son had his feet up on the hand holds anfd his hands above his head holding on to the seesaw frame for dear life. I was alerted by the sound of my son screaming snake at the top of his voice. I ran to see what was wrong with him and stopped when I saw the snake. I turned and ran into the house to get the pistol we kept loaded with rat shot and locked away from the kids,I then returned to see the snake getting ready to strike at the seesaw and I shot it thru the head. I then got a shovel and moved it away from the swing set so my son could get off and run in the house.
Since we have lived here in Lakeland we haven't seen any snakes in the yard.

Cottonmouth's are extremely agressive - yes they are mean.

I've never been attacked by one and neither have my pets. HOWEVER, I have encounter a Black Rat snake that seems to live in our neighborhood and has been noticed by quite a few of the neighbors over the years. They can be about 3 - 4 inches in diameter and this one was about 6 feet long.
My first encounter was two years ago and I wrote a thread here about it. I was weeding and between a hosta and a bayberry shrub, about 6 inches from my nose, something fat and black slithered along in front of me. I fell back on my butt, went to get my shovel to strike at it, but realized that he was moving as fast as he could away from me. I also called over my neighbor to help me, but the snake was gone. I didn't know what type he was, but I found out that he is a constrictor, but only goes after small rodents. He's not venomous.
I met him again this spring (and I'm assuming his mate) when I went to open my gate, and it wouldn't move. I started pushing and looked down, only to see the snake stuck under it. I moved it off of him and I think he was cut from it. However, he slithered into a hole under our cement patio. We kept checking each other out - one time I saw two heads peaking out from that hole.
We've since filled the hole with cement...
