Bomb diffused in London

#1 Postby Brent » Fri Jun 29, 2007 2:37 am

LONDON - British police said on Friday they had defused a bomb in central London.

Explosives officers were called to examine a car parked in The Haymarket, a busy street in the heart of central London's theatre district, early on Friday morning, London police said in a statement.

"They discovered what appeared to be a potentially viable explosive device. This was made safe," they said, adding that counter-terrorism officers were investigating.

A police spokesman confirmed the device was a bomb.

Edit: Sky News via Fox News... massive bomb, potentially very devastating. The guy driving the car crashed into bins at 2am. Very odd. Wonder if there might be other devices since this is just now the start of morning rush hour?

Edit again:

There are unconfirmed reports that gas canisters were removed from the back of the car, close to Piccadilly Circus.

unfortuantely, all it takes is just 1 person with such evil ill-intent to create and strike terror to so many. The world is truly a frightening place to be in.

Good to see at least someone spotted it. Not too far from where I'm sat in central London at the moment.

This would have been a big explosion.

A controlled explosion was carried out on the car, packed with 60 litres of petrol, gas cylinders and nails, in the early hours in Haymarket.

It seems to me this was a home-grown plot. The reason I say this is that it appears most likely that this was a failed detonation and a trained foreign cell would be less likely to have had such a failure.

Fox News is reporting there is a second vehicle (bus) linked to the original car. Scary!

ABC is on right now reporting that British officials have a clear surveillance image of the person who was driving the car, and that he looks very similar to a suspect arrested 2-3 years ago for a similar plot but was released due to lack of evidence.

There's also reportedly another car that contains the same things as the first, so it appears to be some kind of organized plan.
