Foods your parents made you eat

#1 Postby azsnowman » Wed Jun 27, 2007 8:29 pm

We all had certain foods our parents fed us that we could NOT stand...what were some of yours?

Mine..."Fried Bologna!" "BLEEEECK!" I can STILL taste it to this DAY! And of course my most favoritist....MEATLOAF. To this DAY I HATE meatloaf with a PASSION.

We went to a friends house one evening, I LOVE this woman, she is SO kewl but dam it if she didn't fix meatloaf! You know the movies where the kids fed the dog under the dining room table? WELL...that was ME that night, Diane would leave the table to check on something about every half hour and I would SHOVE the meatloaf down her dogs throat in a HURRY to get rid of it, SERIOUSLY!!! :ggreen:

Lets see, I liked most foods my parents ate and that my mom cooked that I can recall.
The only 2 things that stick out in my head were Lima Beans....still hate them, and peas........I can handle those now. They would make me sit at the table for what seemed like an hour till I ate at least half of them. I remeber almost puking a few times. I do not do that to my kids now. I make them at least try whatever it is, but never force them to eat it

We had to eat something of everything on the table. Needless to say, brussel sprouts & sauerkraut are not cooked in my house!

My parents made my nephew who was probably about 4 or 5 years old at the time sit at the table till he ate a mushroom. Poor kid sat there for over an hour with a mushroom in his mouth crying. I told my parents they would never force my kids to do something like that and they never did.

White rice. We had rice or potatoes with alot of our meals and since I usually helped prepare dinner and got sick of peeling potatoes, rice was a pretty common side. I hated it so much that my mother used to put food coloring in it to try to make it a little different. To this day, if I have plain white rice as a side dish, it has to be doused in gravy or completely mixed in with whatever else I'm eating at the time. Yuck.

Canned peas. I still detest them. I used to have a blue plastic cowboy boot cup, and when my parents weren't looking, I would gulp my milk and fill it up with the stinking peas, then ask to be excused. Usually, I would flush them down the toilet, but now and then I used to throw them under the den sofa. My mother never could figure out what those dried up little things were!

Huh ... three foods I always really liked.

For me, the absolute worst was split pea soup. Everyone else in the family loved it ... I still gag at the thought of it.

Green peas, HOW could I forget such a lovely side dish to the MEAT LOAF? Wanna make me sick? Fix a plate of meatloaf (ya know the kind with the grease floating on top and KETCHUP floating on the grease) and green peas, you will see me turn the color of a Martian! :ggreen:

Pan fried Spam

Creamed chipped beef on toast

Pork chops - broiled to the point they resembled dark, mishapen, hockey pucks

Yuck

Never again!

Red pickled hardboiled eggs

She would use the juice from cans of pickled beets and marinate the eggs for a day or so.

I actually like them ...on rare occasions.

LOL @ the broiled pork chops! My mom would brown cuts of beef or pork, then simmer them to a well done consistency of dried up leather, in a concoction of water and Kitchen Bouquet "sauce". The snarpest knife available could barely cut thru this meat! And my mom kept on preparing it this way.....sigh.

My Grandmother used to cook stewed okra, that's just slimy and gross! When I was very little my father used to joke around that he was making brains and eggs, and I would eat the dish with him. When I grew up, I found out that he wasn't joking! When I think about it now, it makes me sick.
